iphone 4s won't turn on

My iphone's battery died about an hour ago, plugged it into my computer's USB port (as I normally do to recharge) and all I have gotten in the past hour is the charging indicator (iphone doesn't show up in itunes). Before I take it to apple to see if the battery is dead, anyone know why this is happening? I did a reset (held down power and home key at same time and nothing happens, screen just goes black and comes back to red charging indicator.

Try to put it in DFU mode....if iTunes recognizes it in recovery mode, than restore to 8.1.2....it should wake up again. If not, than I guess, it is time to change the battery.
