If it’s just a possibility, why phrase the discussion as if it were a fact? Why would you take on the naming scheme of the - less successful - iPads to brand your most successful product?

Well...

1. ipad air has those colors. I have a strong suspicion those are the iphone 12 colors.
2. ipad air has the touchid in the power button which is amazing and could be one of Apple's "successful" products. It's at least the most exciting so far this year!
3. ipad air is $599 which isn't cheap, and has the new A14 chip.

Those three reasons are perhaps why the 5.4" might be an air.... Though I know that the 5.4" won't have touchid in the power button. That'll be next year, of course.

You are explaining why the iPad air may have the same colours as the company’s far more popular iPhone product. That doesn’t indicate why the iPhone should inherit the Air moniker. It will probably just be called iPhone. Why complicate it.

I'm actually surprised so many people disagree with this, my guess is on Air for the low end as well. But before that I would think they just don't give it a name, and call it iPhone vs iPhone pro

The problem with touch ID on the power button is the ergonomics. I don’t think it would be that easy to do so one-handed. That’s the ease-of-use when you look at Face ID and Touch ID as it is now, it can be maneuvered with one hand.

For example: When you’re holding the phone one-handed, trying to reach touch ID on the power button would be very cumbersome . What Apple really should do, is implement touch ID embedded under the display along with offering Face ID for both biometric security options.

Nah I disagree with this. It's quite easy when picking the phone up for your right thumb to rest on the power button for a second to unlock it or your left index finger (if you are left handed).

It's pretty clear that the Touch ID implemented on the new iPad Air is a test run for what will ultimately be coming to the replacement for the current SE. The current SE will move to a full screen display in early 2022 I'm guessing. Makes sense for Touch ID to move to the power button at that point. Face ID will persist on the higher end devices. The long game (3-5 years from now) is to have both Face ID and Touch ID. At first it will be with a notch and Touch ID on the power button and then then very long game (6-8 years) is everything under the display somehow and both Face and Touch ID working in tandem.

But Touch ID on the side power button is absolutely ergonomically easy and is 100% coming to iPhone in the next 12-24 months.
