Hello,

Today I noticed an issue with my iPhone 5 screen, it felt lifted on the edges. I did a bit of research and found out that it may be the battery expanding. Being worried I opened up my iPhone to find that the plastic side edges of the screen assembly were splitting off from the screen assembly part itself. Okay minor issue, I can just get a new screen assembly.

However, looking at the battery it felt like the plastic packet/casing of the battery was slightly detached from the battery itself. When I ran my fingers over the battery I could feel the gap between the battery and its casing. Could this be the gasses causing the casing to lift slightly from the battery? I did make out a very very minor bump towards the top of the battery.

Is this okay or is the casing supposed to be fully sealed around the battery? This is a used Ebay iPhone 5, its exact age is unknown, will Apple replace the battery for free seeing as its a defect?

How long have you had the phone?

I would take into an Apple shop as soon as you can and try to get the battery replaced, or purchase a replacement yourself.

I've heard of older iPhone batteries doing this when they've got a lot of cycles under their belts.

The battery itself is excellent, holds charge brilliantly. But I have had the phone for 2 years now, it was bought used. Can Apple still replace it or will they charge £££.

Found this on the Apple site.

The issue is a swollen battery

They will charge you for the cost of the battery and no more.

It will be a replacement iPhone 5.

This is a known issue. I have two iPhone 5's. One has been replaced TWICE for this and the other has been replaced once.

Please note that however capable you may be at replacing iPhone parts, Apple uses special tools and equipment to replace swelling batteries. There is a chance the battery can explode.

The shell around the battery will contain it until replacement, but if left uncheck it will eventually cause the screen to separate from the housing.

It's definitely the battery which is swollen and is in need of replacement. I believe the battery costs should be around $79.00, which Apple will do in Store for you.

A swollen battery can be caused by many issues. Listed below is a link for more information.

Free iPhone5 battery replacement program ended January 2016 sadly.
