iPhone 5 not properly recognized by Windows

I have an iPhone 5 that, whenever it's connected to a computer, is not properly recognized by Windows. iTunes loads up and does its thing, but Windows doesn't seem to notice it, as in there's no device connected in My Computer. I'm trying to store the photos and I would view the device as a camera to do so, but that doesn't seem to be an option.

I've tried reinstalling iTunes, updating the iOS version, and reinstalling Apple drivers on my desktop. I tried another computer, it didn't recognize the device either, but another iPhone was recognized perfectly fine.

Are there some other things I can try? If not, is there a free program that I can use to easily copy the photos from my device? If the photos are all in some nice location that a file browser could view, would that work?

Does iTunes see the iPhone 5?

As far as I know it's not an external hard drive, it shouldn't show as a mounted drive you can drag/drop files around with. Unless you use a third party app that understands it's an iPhone and does it's best.

iTunes should see it though.

iTunes recognizes it, but it's supposed to show up as a camera. It allows you to copy the photos off of it. iTunes doesn't save the photos in a recognizable format, it's stored as part of the backup. Like I said, the iPhone 6 I have connects perfectly fine and gets detected as a camera.

Ok, I understand.

Have you tried to put the iPhone on a different USB port? And make sure this isn't a usb hub, or usb port on another device, like a keyboard, but directly into the PC.
If you have other camera devices on the system like a webcam, unplug it first. Maybe that loads the right driver.

I read online some people resolved it by removing their driver for it and letting it get recognized as new hardware again.

Ok you need to change the behaviour of windows and how it recognises he device you are plugging in. Go to control panel and locate a setting that allow you to change the defaults for the devices you connect. You should see your iPhone listed and I believe you should also see options such as take no action, connect as media device or some thing similar. Either way choose the option to connect as a media device to copy files off it.

my father had this issue where windows 10 no longer recognized the phone so he could transfer media files and it wouldn't show up in My Computer. I found the following link which worked on my Windows 10 netbook and iPod touch and also worked for his computer. you need to change the USB driver to MTP USB.

I tried changing the driver to MTP, it failed to install the driver. I get an error "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" when I try. I tried this on two different computers with the same result. On one computer, the iPhone was listed in the autoplay devices and no changes to the default action changed the behaviour (it was set to ask every time already). I know that the computer has previously recognized that phone as a camera device. On the second computer, the device was not listed in the autoplay devices list. It has never been connected as a camera device to the second computer.
