iPhone 5, iOS 9.0 (Public Beta 3)

Okay, so here are the series of events:

  • Put phone in pocket, 80% battery
  • Check phone about an hour later, phone mysteriously off
  • Turn it back on, now at 15% battery
  • I plug it into my wall charger and charge it to 100%
  • Unplug it, do a couple things, and then place it down
  • Go to use it, it's powered off again
  • Turn it on, notice the signal status says "Searching LTE", but I still had a usable data connection, wifi also worked fine
  • Phone seemed to stay on when plugged in, so I started a backup and went to bed
  • Phone once again powers off shortly after being disconnected, and I can less and less frequently get it to power back on at all
  • I would try to power it it on to no avail, then directly after try again having moved the phone and it would boot

Now, I wanted to see if it was a firmware issue, so I did a full DFU restore and then restored from my previous iCloud backup. It didn't fix the issue. It still continues to remain usable if plugged in and not moved around.

I don't think it's a software issue, I mean I've been using iOS 9.0 fine for months, and it just randomly started...so it must be a localized hardware issue.

I DID replace the battery myself a few months ago, battery purchased from iFixit. I realize this could be an issue, but I'm almost certain I did everything properly, and I used the phone after that for months without an issue. I'm not quite sure how the power management really works on the hardware level...if anyone does I'd appreciate the info. As I said, it works indefinitely when plugged in, and for a few minutes after being disconnected and locked.

I think it would have to be either a completely faulty battery, or that there is a connector loose inside. I'm going to really test and see if the phone stays on while disconnected and not moved/touched...if that works than I'm thinking there's a janky connection. If not, faulty battery. I'll open it up later and reverse the battery installation, then install it again. If that doesn't work, a new battery is probably in order.

I'd just love any sort of information or help I can get. The thing that stumps me is the "Searching LTE" signal status, even though there's a connection. Why would that be affected by a faulty battery? Is there something else that could be faulty/damaged on the logic board related to power? Does the iPhone completely bypass the battery when plugged in and 100% charged? I've had this thing since launch day...

EDIT: So right now I'm doing some troubleshooting. I unplugged the phone and am not moving it, turned the camera and bluetooth on to try and drain the battery (to see if the issue happens when it depletes a certain amount). Right now it had dropped to 95%, still working.

EDIT: 86%...

EDIT: It made it down to 50% just fine. I've concluded that it only shuts off when moved, and can be held flatly. Looks like something must be loose.

EDIT: Opened her up, reconnected the battery, tested again and...it still would just restart over and over. Thankfully I kept my old battery when I swapped them out, so I tried putting that one in.

SUCCESS! Phone is powering up and staying on properly. So pretty much iFixit gave me a trash battery.
