iPhone 5 Screen Problem - Stripes

Recently my iPhone 5 screen came up with stripes on it. This left the phone pretty much unusable as the screen doesn't seem to respond to touch in the striped area, making it nearly impossible to use.

Any suggestions as to what might be causing this that I can try fixing myself, or what a repair might involve or cost?

Edit: I've already tried hard reset with all apps closed to no avail.

Thanks for the link, but that article deals with vertical lines after a screen replacement. I've not replaced my screen nor even ever opened my phone.
