I have this old iphone 5 with a severely broken digitiser (screen worked fine, - in fact digitiser worked fine!) that I have been using as a music player for a few years. I put a screen protector over the screen to cover the cracks and stop it splintering.

Suddenly after a few months of non-use, I tried turning it on/ charging it and it is completely dead. Wont tURn on or light up when connected to MBP. No buttons work at all.Neither by pressing nor holding pressed in any sequence I have tried.

Sorry to be a bit non-specific but does anyone have any ideas on this please or can these indications ONLY be a function of shorting cells in the battery? (There is no bulging)

Thanks guys, that must be it. In fact after three days of trying to press buttons (eg power-vol down) and with nothing whatsoeer happening, suddenly for no reason, the screen came up and told me to press home to unlock! But pressing home doesnt actually do anything and it wont unlock

Most importantly, the battery indicator shows empty (red) and it won't charge! So something must have caused the system to come alive but I don't see it lasting long. Anyway, there is now no downside to buying a new battery and screen.

You will have to do it yourself (replacement) or pay a third party repair shop to do it. Apple stopped working on the iPhone 5 a few years ago. I couldn't even get them to replace a battery on a 6 Plus last year and that's two models newer than the 5.

Just making you aware (if you weren't already).

Oh, I figured that! It doesn't look exactly difficult, I have been tearing these things down since my I bought my first non-working HTC 8125 and turned it into a Wizard!

The only problem was with buying parts and finding that the thing still won't work. Plus, my offspring pointed out to me that it is a 6S, not a 5
