My iPhone 5S (running ios 8.4.1) was 1% like 5 min ago and now it's 32 % which is weird and not that good, I don't know if it's a software bug or not, I know some people will reply that it's not the place for ios 8.4.1 bugs but the ios 8 blog seems to be inactive.

Try downloading CoconutBattery (it's for Mac only), and then check your battery's health. Also, try charging the phone completely, then leave it continuously playing a YouTube playlist until it dies and only boots up to the dead battery screen. Then charge it until it's full, and leave it on the charger for an extra hour.

First of all, I'd like to tell you that you've made a great choice on staying on iOS 8.

I'm still on iOS 8 because iOS 9 runs like crap, but anyway.

This issue usually occurs with a defective battery. I've had my 5s for two years and I've encountered similar scenarios but not over such a large interval like yours (i.e. 1% to 6%, etc.).

I recommend to get a replacement if you still can, or just hang onto it until a future upgrade unless it gets worse or it irks you.

At what percentage does it generally shut down?

The battery is OK and stays for a long time, mainly for like 6 hours of heavy usage which is still great compared to 2.5 hours with ios 9. It usually shuts down like from 1% to 5%. It used to shut down from 5% to 13% sometimes when I was on ios 9.

My wife's 5s was doing something very similar and before we ended up sending it in for service, we ran a diagnostic with Apple online. The diag came back as, replace/repair battery. There's a possibility your battery is failing.
