When I was jailbroken on 8.1 on my 5s my phone would overheat and battery would drain quickly. I'm on 8.1.2 now and wondering if the battery life is better while jailbroken

I don't think, if you take care about the tweaks installed, that jailbreak would cause overheating or much higher battery usage.

The jailbreak itself is RARELY cause, it's tweaks people blindly install. Almost no one ever connects that and blame the jb itself. It's never their fault.

Depends on the junk that people install on it after they JB it.
Just Jailbreaking the phone will not cause it to overheat or burn though battery like you mentioned.
What did you install on it and did you try removing hacks that were causing that problem?
There's many stuff that people install without thinking that they will run or do certain tasks 24/7 that will eat through your battery like crazy.
One instance I can remember was one hack that would constantly scan for your fingerprint without you having to press the home button first.
Thus killing battery like crazy.

I had like Zeppelin, swipeselection, flex 2, upscale, dateinstatusbar, slide2kill8, movie box, the tweak that disables all the low power alerts and favebot that's about it

You need to find what hack is causing the bad battery life and remove it.
Start installing them one by one and using it for a day to be able to tell what one is the faulty hack. Trial and error.
The JB itself is not the problem, its the stuff people install from cydia that cause such issues.
Try to keep it simple and only install the hacks that you need and use the most.
Dont install everything you see out there.
Sometimes even a good and useful hack will be coded bad and have memory and battery leak. I'd rather remove it than have to deal with terrible battery life or other issues it might cause.

The DetailedBatteryUsage tweak might help make this process less painful. It will add Cydia apps and processes to the existing battery usage dialog in Settings/usage. Nice historical graph too.

Exactly.
I love that hack:)

Hell ya it's awesome lol. Here's the link invade anyone readings interested and doesn't wanna dig for the file for BatteryUsageEnhancer
