I switched a few months ago from my iphone 5 to the Galaxy S4, and took it back and got the iPhone 5s instead. At first I loved the S4. Then after a day I felt overwhelmed with all of it. I also do a lot of group messaging with my buddies and they all have iPhones, so I missed iMessage. I also never had good luck with taking pictures on the S4. All of them turned out really blurry, meanwhile my iPhone 5s camera is fantastic.

I want a phone with a big screen, but am also just kind of bored with the simplicity of iOS. I like how smooth it is, but it isn't much fun anymore. The Note 3 really has my attention, or the S5, but I'm worried I would just go back to the iPhone again. My carrier is Verizon, by the way. Thoughts?

if you missed iMessage on the first go around, chances are you're going to miss it again.

I would avoid TouchWiz and go with a Google Play Edition phone. If you must have a bigger screen then I would go with the Note 3, try to root it and install a custom ROM on it.

Other than that, you won't miss iOS much.

I went from a iPhone 5 to a Note II to a S4 and I don't miss iOS. Both are great OS's but Android fits my style a bit more than apple--I'm into the open OS.

Good luck!

Edit: if you don't mind the camera, the HTC One M8 seems like a good buy.

If camera quality is not a very important requirement, then you'll love the HTC One (M8). I have one and it is a damn good phone from the hardware and the software.

I went from an iPhone 4S to a HTC One last July. I wanted a larger screen, widgets and the ability to customize more than iOS allows. I don't regret it at all.

It depends on the carrier version etc... Best bet is to head over to XDA Developers Forum.

Be very aware reading threads over there and following the instructions may seem very daunting - and it is - but that is where you will get all the info you will need.

Likewise remember Rooting your device may trigger KNOX counter, meaning you lose your hardware warranty (an issue for repairing & can make reselling later a problem) and lose the KNOX environment should you ever want to separate business & pleasure on your phone with a secure environment....

I take a lot of pictures which is the reason that I am not considering this phone. If the camera were better, it would probably be my first choice.

You'll will enjoy it initially and won't be able to believe how foolishly you stuck to the iPhone for all these years. Then in a few months time you will begin to loathe it. A seething hatred for how substandard every aspect of Android is compared to iOS. You'll feel cheated at throwing $900 down the drain.

I went to a showroom to check out the S5. As soon as I unlocked the phone I opened Chrome to test if they fixed the browser scroll and zoom lag. As Chrome launched, the new tab animation stuttered for no reason on a brand new octa core device thats 5x as powerful as the iPhone. I laughed audibly, put it down and left.

What exactly do you mean by feeling overwhelmed? Was it too hard to use? Just too much of a change? I don't know if this would be any different if you switched to Android again.

I also do a lot of group messaging with my buddies and they all have iPhones, so I missed iMessage.

You will miss it again unless you and your friends switch to another messaging app that is cross platform and supports group messaging.

If you want a phone with a big screen, you may want to wait to see if the next iPhone will have a screen big enough to your liking. You didn't really say thing that really jumps out at me to indicate you would like Android better other than being bored with iOS. In the same message you felt overwhelmed by Android before. Maybe you should consider Windows Phone. It is not as simple as iOS, but perhaps you will not feel overwhelmed by it.
