Hi guys, I've an iPhone 5s and the screen is popping up on the upper right corner (see photo). Anyone knows what could it be? Maybe is a swollen battery, in that case, does apple replace it? (the phone is out of warranty).
I would take it to Apple as if it does not show any abuse, the might just replace it free of charge out of warranty. The units I have seen that the battery is swelling usually pushes the screen out in the middle and not the corner.
The same thing happened to mine and they gave me a new one. Supposedly, for swollen batteries they will replace it for up to 3 years from when you bought it.
You are taking the right action. Apple should replace the battery for free, as it is an unsafe condition. Personally if they refused to do so, I would be moving away from Apple, they are not the only cell phone producer.Took my 5 to an Apple Store last Sunday because of a swollen battery. I didn't get to talk to a genius but the sales guy did and they will not replace the battery for free. I have an appointment this Friday at the Apple Store closer to my house, will see what they say.

No, not anymore.I've got a 5S that I'm pretty sure has an expanding battery (screen is pushed out so far the backlight is shining out of the side). But I'm past the 3 year point (bought in Nov 2013). Any hope of getting it fixed for free?
No, not anymore.
You can still get a replacement though, but they only charge you the price of the battery.
For my wife's old iPhone 5 and my old iPhone 5 it was $160+tax. That's $80/iPhone. I got them both replaced in May of this year (2017).
Still a good deal I think. I was further fortunate enough that the Apple geniuses allowed me to choose my carrier for the new replacement phones. That let me choose Verizon which then force-unlocked the phones (they were locked to Sprint).
Yeah, that's a case by case basis. It was worth it to me because my wife's phone was replaced first. That went to my son who was using a 4s at the time.Thanks. I'll have to decide whether or not a 64GB iPhone 5S is worth $80 to me. It's currently used only for music playback, but also makes a good backup phone since it runs iOS 11. I have the GSM unlocked version. But I've got an iPhone 6 that's about to take it's place for music playback/backup phone, and I'd guess the 5S is unlikely to get iOS 12 a year from now.
Swollen battery, as already suggested. Apple will replace it free out of warranty.
When I wrote that post you quote it was February of 2016. Things have changed since then.I think it looks like a swollen battery but they won’t replace it for free

Then I was wrong last year as well. They didn’t replace mine last year 2016

Will they replace mine with s cracked screen? I dropped it a while back but nothing happened. My phone overheats way too often and my battery has gone to crap (went from 84% to 43% in seconds)The same thing happened to mine and they gave me a new one.
