So, once again, HTC has come out with a killer new phone, and I had to spend some extended time with it...

So here's my thoughts, versus my iPhone 5s. This is NOT an iOS vs Android bash thread, so please keep those sorts of thoughts to themselves.

Build quality:

HTC has absolutely nailed it here. The build quality is absolutely Apple's equal. While it's not quite as sophisticated looking as Apple's 5s, it's undoubtedly the best-feeling Android handset on the market. It's stunning, especially in the gun-metal color I've got here. Gorgeous.

Screen:

As I said about the previous HTC One (M7), HTC has a stunning IPS display here in 1080p. Because the screen is a little larger here than the previous generation One, the PPI is a little lower, but still much, much higher than Apple's "Retina" displays, which quite frankly are not high enough resolution anymore. I have extremely good vision, and for example I like to read http://www.nyt.com on my iPhone (desktop version), but don't zoom in on the text. On the HTC One the text is sharp and clear, whereas the iPhone's Retina display is noticeably more fuzzy.

The idea of a "Retina" display is great marketing, but HTC has much more a Retina display on the HTC One than Apple does. And because it's an IPS LCD, the most important number: the sub-pixels per inch, are noticeably higher than the Samsung Galaxy S4/S5 or any iPhone, and text is much, much sharper on the HTC One.

Sound:

HTC has hit a home-run once again. The sound on the HTC One is the absolute best thing on any phone, ever. Louder and more crisp than even the previous generation HTC One, the dual speakers facing the user during video etc are just brilliant. The HTC One has better sound than anyone iPhone or iPad on the market. Well done, HTC.

Camera:

This is where things get interesting. I know HTC has stuck with the same camera as last year (losing the image stabilization, though), but there's some serious magic going on with the One's dual cameras and U-Focus technology. I'm very, VERY impressed with it.

Here's a quick example at my neighbor's house. I took the original picture, and then just edited it in less than one second to look like the second picture. I'm not saying this technology is perfect, but it's the kind of camera genius I'd expect from Apple, not HTC, and, quite frankly, I think it's brilliant. (notice how much sharper the dog/pillow is in the edited picture, even aside from the yummy bokeh). This literally required one touch on the screen to change the focus point, after the picture was taken.

Overall, I'm super, super impressed with the new HTC One. I really hope Apple rises to the challenge, as this new HTC is one of the best phones on the market, and without any doubt the best Android phone out there.

The camera is really interesting.

Regarding your example of the New York Times text, wouldn't the text be larger on a larger display, and therefore less fuzzy regardless since the browser is scaling the webpage to fit the viewport? It doesn't seem like a one to one comparison to me, considering you specifically mention not zooming in on the text.

From all the reviews I've read and watched on YouTube they claim the camera is rubbish, as it was on the previous version, they look great on a small screen but on a desktop, the quality just isn't there. I will admit, the build quality does indeed look very good how does it compare weight wise to the 5s?

Nothing to do with the size of the text. It's the sharpness of it. You can easily tell the difference, even when zoomed in to the "same" size.

It's heavier than a 5s, but spread out so it doesn't *feel* heavy. And the camera is NOT rubbish. So irritating to read that..

How is this a 5s vs. M8 post? Seems pretty one-sided to me. On an iPhone thread, mind you. This forum does provide alternative categories to post topics like this one.

Anyway, I'd be interested in knowing your dislikes, if any, of the M8. Thanks.

iPhone any time.
better (hardware, software) device is good...
but,
best after sales support, 3 year of software updates/ support, better resale value...
seems important too...

If I were ever to go to Android, the HTC One is the phone I would get. Regarding the camera, all the comparisons I've seen have shown the iPhone camera to be better for daylight/outdoor photos while the One tends to have better indoor photos. And that bokeh effect, I want that on an iPhone. Rather than having two cameras on the back, I could see Apple using a beefy processor to make the iPhone quickly take a few photos with different focuses and letting the user tap to choose the focus they want. My Lumia 920 does something like that and it makes taking photos of stuff like rain on a window easy if I don't feel like using manual focus (also something I want on the iPhone camera).

Yup, more like a one-sided fan post than a comparison, and sounds very emotionally invested in the HTC. Strange and out of place. Would be more credible if it is a fair comparison and less zealous.

Is it possible to just like something a lot? I have no idea what leads some people to think that if I like something, it's a terrible thing ohnoes!

What is my current phone? An iPhone 5s. Am I switching to an HTC One? NO!

I love iOS, and I prefer it to Android. All I'm saying is if you're OS agnostic, the HTC One is the phone to get. That's it. I'm not, so I'm sticking with my 5s, and am hopeful that Apple will raise the bar.

Now, is that better? :)

Thank you for the useful contribution. You'll notice I compared many things (sound, screen etc) to the iPhone.

The HTC One doesn't take multiple photos, though, as far as I'm aware, which is what makes the second-camera-depth technology very interesting.

After playing with one I wish it was the iPhone. Going back to an iPhone afterward felt like a downgrade. I due prefer iOS though.

I have a 5S and a Note 3. I'm not getting the S5, I'm selling my Note 3 and purchasing the HTC One M8 beast which I also feel is the Android smartphone to get. The Note 3 is great but just too large for me and a phablet which really shouldn't be compared anyways.

The camera on the M8 while not up to snuff with other devices is a low priority to me.

Time will tell if this thread is moved to the IOS alternatives forum. I'm guessing it will eventually though.

I like the one. Probably the only phone that would sway me to Android. If the iPhone 6's screen is still 4 inches I'll probably get the One M9. Hopefully they'll sort the camera out by then.
I haaaaaatte Samsung phones

It seems a good phone, though I am not buying anything that does't allow vanilla android on it. been there, done that, and generally a disappointing experience as time goes on.

That said, don;t forget this is a cat and mouse game. We are about six months into iPhone 5S lief cycle. In the smartphone world that is AGES. I am sure we will see the iPhone6(?) smash this device too. It will be just as fair of a comparison, being that this device will be six months old. Do you see where I am coming from?

i thought it was interesting how they came in the same colors as the 5s....

To be fair, I believe the ONE did too...
It just wasn't available on all carriers.

Can anyone compare the microphones (i.e., outgoing call quality) of the 5/5s to the new HTC offering? HTC had a few duds in the past making conversation nearly impossible.

What are they actually like compared as phones? Signal strength? Voice quality? Stability of calls?

Quite honestly, I find there's very little between any flagship devices in terms of signal strength, voice quality etc. I also find that this is generally a given these days. :D

I'm always very tempted to go to android after these new devices come out, but after seeing the quality of apps on android my mind is quickly made up. At the end of the day, apps always look and perform much better on iOS than android. The One is a great phone but until android fixes that app problem I'll stick with iOS.

The original HTC One was the only phone I liked more than iPhone, and the M8 is a very good phone BUT .....

Yes, there are a lot of "but" ...
They followed the typical Android habit to make the screen bigger at any iteration , so the phone now is just too big and too heavy while the original One was almost perfect.
They wasted part of the gained screen space with software buttons.
They used a gimmick dual camera solution losing the opportunity to improve the previous camera: an 8 Mpixel UltraPixel sensor with OIS would be a dream. A 4 Mpixel solution without OIS isn't just enough.

Don't get me wrong: I'm in love with M8 and if I have to buy a droid, it will be my choice for sure (in Google Play Edition).
But I see it like a missed opportunity ......
