Other iPhone 6 data safety

Due to water damage a friend damaged her iPhone 6 and then ended up trying to charge it. When she took it in for service the guys said the phone is dead.

Now she has the option of giving this phone to the store and getting a new iPhone. But she is unsure about any data theft. I know that iPhones are encrypted and normally you will erase the phone completely before giving it away.

But she couldn’t have done it in this case. Is there some way in her passwords, photos, and other somewhat sensitive data could be stolen?

Should she not give away the phone at all?

For safety reasons, I would not give the phone to the store. If it is dead, she probably wouldn't get hardly any real credit for it.

Apple takes in devices for recyling. Sometimes they might even give a credit.

If you can't trust Apple to not try and forensic the data then there isn't really anyone or anything you can trust.

If you’re talking about taking it to an Apple Store, I wouldn’t worry. If Apple really wanted the data off our phones, they wouldn’t need to physically have them in their possession anyway.

Well, I mean sure. If you want to throw it out in the garbage so that rare metals and hazardous materials leech into the environment that's your business.

But Apple can take care of that for you and dispose of it properly.

Thanks for your responses guys. Well, for some reason the Apple store people are offering to buy back the phone, likely with the expectation that she will get a new one.
But, it's reassuring to hear that the chances of data theft from the "men in the middle" are not high.

Well, I don't know. The employees I guess. Not sure who my friend's spoken to as she is currently traveling to India, and the store in question is an Apple authorized store in New Delhi, the capital.

As far as I remember there are no real Apple Stores in India, just resellers (correct me if I'm wrong). In this case, I would say " 100% Hammer time!" [2], also I wouldn't trust stores in India (but I'm overparanoid someties). Or just keep it till getting back from the trip if she has any real Apple Store at home.

Apple authorized reseller is not the same as Apple store. Having said that, most shops probably wouldn’t really care about personal data, they would probably just care about making small repairs on it to resell in secondary market and/or selling the phone for parts.

Imo if she put proper security beforehand like a proper passcode and 2FA for her iCloud account, I don’t think there’s anything to be concerned about as the phone would be activation locked at best. For precaution, just have her log in to find my iPhone and set to erase the phone if it goes online.

Apple authorised stores are NOT the same as Apple stores. I’d rather go to a proper apple retail store.
