iPhone 6 iMessage won't automatically change to text

Hello

I have a short question about iMessage. In the settings I have put ON the "Send as text" option. If I send a message to my gf, it's an iMessage and it says "delivered". However, my girlfriend said she didn't have internet at this moment. I think iMessage should automatically convert to a text when I or the recipient don't have internet? I also don't have enough time to double tap to change it to a text message manually.

Sending iMessages back and forth when we are both on WiFi works perfectly though.

Am I missing out something?

Yes. She has an iPad so that receives all of my iMessages I guess. I also tried the message stuff with my dad's iPhone and it also didn't work. All of the iMessages however were received on his iPad.

What can I do about this?

do they both have cellular data turned off? Or do they both frequent places where there phones can't receive data?

Well they both said they would turn it off for me to test. However, the phone of my GF seems to be currently online so the iMessages may be directly sent to her iPad.

iMessage will automatically try to send a message via SMS if it can't deliver the message through iMessage, however, it gets tricky because she has an iPad. If her phone has no internet connection, but her iPad does, then iMessage will see that the message was successfully delivered to her iPad and not attempt to switch to SMS. The message will eventually appear on her phone, once it gets an internet connection, but she may not see it right away.

If her iPhone didn't have an internet connect and she didn't have an iPad or if the iPad was offline too, then iMessage would see that it couldn't deliver the message and automatically send it via SMS.

It does seem odd that her phone doesn't have an internet connection because even if it's not connected to wifi it should still be able to use a cellular data connection, but if this is a frequent problem, then unfortunately the only solution would be for her to turn off iMessage on both her iPad and iPhone and use SMS only.

The weird thing is that I never heard her complain about this stuff. She also texts with lots of people with iPhones and never did she say anything about problems with receiving stuff.
I got confirmation that her phone was dead now so maybe that was the problem?
In the mean time I turned off iMessage. I'm bored of looking for a solution.

If her phone was dead it wouldn't get any messages. Once the phone comes back on it will receive anything that was delivered to her iPad.

So you turned iMessage off for nothing? Your question was answered. Having another device that receives iMessages connected to the Internet will show them as delivered, even if the phone doesn't have a wifi or cellular connection. Once the phone reconnects it will download the delivered messages.

Tell her to turn wifi off on her iPad before leaving if she goes to an area without cellular data.

Well if she rarely if ever goes to an area without cellular data then no it's not an issue. If her phone dies then of course she wouldn't know she was getting any messages till the phone comes back on.
