Not sure what's going on but the past month or so, my iPhone 6 has sporadically failed to recognize the SIM. Ejecting the SIM and pushing it back in fixes it the first or second time, but this keeps happening which is worrisome.

Plus there isn't any pattern to when this occurs. Sometimes I'll come out to my car after work and I'll get this error, despite my phone not being touched all day. I've seen it happen when the phone was on my desk and not being used at all. It went from 3 bars to "No SIM." Or I could be using it, sitting down and all of a sudden this happens, so it's not the result of motion or anything.

I'm baffled. Has anyone ever had an issue like this?
 
Usually any SIM issues are fixed by a new SIM card. But since you've stated there's no pattern to it then I'm not sure. Do you have any warranty left on your iPhone 6? If so I would take it in to Apple immediately and see what they can do. If you're barely out of warranty you can also try as I've heard of Apple being generous if it's not too far out of warranty. If not, then you could try replacing the SIM card to see if that's the issue.

I got it on launch day (Sept 2014) so I'm pretty far out of warranty :/
 
If you've handled the sim card with your hands, you could have oils from your hand on the contact points that re-inserting the phone scrapes off. I'd suggest taking a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol and wiping off the sim card. I had the same problem as I was using the same card for years, but I haven't had the problem since.
 
Swap the sim. Depending on your carrier it's fast and free (and if not still super cheap). Anything beyond that is an Apple repair which could get spendy.
