iPhone 6, or LG G3?

Hey all, just joined the forums recently after lurking for a long time! I have a question about purchasing my very first phone, and I would like some opinions from some fellow forum member here!

I got my first job recently and have been saving up for something that I might've wanted (after getting a PlayStation 4). Now I might want to get my very first cell phone! I have been using Text Free/Pinger ever since I got my first iPod touch in 2009 all the way up to now with my 32GB 5th gen iPod touch. Now that I have a job, I can get an actual phone for myself!

To the main point of this thread, I have just thought of getting a 64GB iPhone 6 straight from Apple so I can use it with any carrier, and also use it as my music player also! But, I also have looked at the LG G3, which doesn't seem like a bad phone at all, though I am used to Apple's ecosystem with iOS and iTunes.

I can either wait for 2-3 weeks for the iPhone 6 and pay $802 for it, or get an LG G3 and get an SD Card to hold all my music (a good amount from the iTunes store). I just don't know what to decide on.

Sorry that this post is a bit long, but I wanted to explain as much as possible to those that want to give their opinion on this and help me with what I want to purchase!

(I do also want to build my own custom PC, but that can wait most likely).

Look, I'm slightly bias to Apple and you are on a Apple fan forum/website. Here are my thoughts; get an iPhone.


1. The Apple ecosystem is a wonderful thing. Apple pretty much leads the pack on most things at this point. Notice how Microsoft and Google now are trying to develop their own HealthKit?

2. Support for Apple products is second to none. Problem with your device? Just go to the nearest Apple store or call 1-800 number.

3. Beautifully designed quality products that lead to higher resale value.

4. Rich integration into their other products and ecosystem.

Get it!

If you are already in the Apple Eco system........it makes sense to stay there. The IP6 is a great phone. I am sure you will enjoy it. Apple support is great even beyond the normal warranty. They stand behind their products.

So I guess it comes down to how you use your phone. You can't go wrong with either the G3 ot IP6. Since the G3 is a 5.5 inch phone will you be getting the IP6 Plus? If you are buying it outright you might want to compare the prices.

If I were to choose, I'd get the iPhone.
I have buyers remorse moving from my iPhone to my opo.
But If you want to try something new what about the G3? You can also get an extended battery.

I've used a lot of different phones, every iPhone since release and a myriad of Android phones. While Android is a great OS and there are lots of great hardware options, the ecosystem and simplicity of iOS are second to none.

Love my iP6 and 6+.

but seriously I'd suggest neither. The Galaxy Note 4 is the best phone on the market at the moment so I would say it is worth getting that.

Also, I'd pass on the building a PC idea that you are wanting to do. That was cool in the 90's and 2000's but now that ship has sailed. Windows pretty much sucks at this point and Microsoft looks to Apple for inspiration desktop wise. Besides, replacing video cards every so often when they cost the same as a gaming console gets old quick.

Also, not sure if the G3 can play DRM iTunes music.

Well certainly not a LG G3. There are much better Android choices like the Note 4, upcoming Nexus 6, upcoming Droid Turbo, OnePlus One if you can get an invite, etc.

But in your case, sounds like the iPhone 6 is the best option for you. You may just have to shell out for the 128GB version.

What can you afford?

The iPhone is extremely expensive. You can get a G3 for about 300 euros now if you are lucky, or other great Android newer phones too.

Maybe a Sony Z3 Compact, or a Nexus 6 etc etc.

Don't buy something you can't afford.

If you really like iOS and are OK with the premium you pay for an iPhone, stick with Apple.

That being said, from your brief post, sounds like you may like to tinker with your tech. Don't let your experience with iOS or any investment in the Apple ecosystem sway you away from Android. There are a bunch of great Android options available now, most, if not all costing less than a comparably equipped iPhone. And Android offers infinitely more flexibility and customization vs. iOS, if that interests you.

I'm one of the few resident proponents of the iPhone/iOS here in the Alternatives us forum but there's much I like about Android. Apple gear works best for me and my family right now but if that wasn't the case and I was just starting my foray into mobile tech, i might very well choose Android. If I was choosing an Android device right now I'd get a Nexus 6. If cost was a more significant issue, it would probably be a Moto X.

The iPhone 6 is a solid but also very safe pick. You know what you're going to get out of it. I'm not sure how you dig Android 5.0 coming out soon but if you're not a huge fan, I would get the iPhone.

If you decide to switch to Android, you can always upload your iTunes music to Google Music. I buy my music (rarely now) from iTunes and just have Google music upload it. I have an iPhone 5s right now and if I decide to switch back to Android all my music will be available for me via Google Music. Another possibility is to get a Spotify subscription which is multi-platform friendly.

As for Android phones, I am quite anti-Samsung mostly due to my bad experience with the Galaxy Nexus. So for me, the Galaxy and Note series are automatically out. I think the best phone right now is the Nexus 6, although it seems like you would have to wait for quite a while. Other top phones I'd recommend are the Moto X (pure edition) or Sony Z3 (or Z3c). Droid Turbo if you're on Verizon.

That is rather silly really. Samsung didn't really treat the Galaxy Nexus as one of their own. You are denying yourself of some terrific devices.

It's been almost 3 weeks now with the Note 4, and I've used the stylus at least once a day. It's extremely convenient.

The G3 is the best phone I've ever had. It has a fantastic screen, solid battery life, and a much smaller form factor than the 6+ even though its screen is the same size. The camera, a weakness on many Android devices, is superb. I've set it up with Nova Launcher, my go-to interface.

My phone history goes like this: iPhone, 3, 3gs, 4, 4s, Samsung S3, iPhone 5, Moto Droid Maxx (killer phone except for camera), LG G3. The switch to Android was initially somewhat painful given I'm otherwise 100% Apple. The biggest issue is the iMessage "bug" that holds your number hostage for SMS once you change OS (yes it's real; no, the numerous reported fixes didn't work for me). I use Dropbox for my "Camera Roll", Hangouts for iMessage and Skype type things, Textra for SMS, and MightyText for "Continuity".

The only thing I feel I'm missing versus the 6/6+ is the handy fingerprint sensor (at the expense of phone size), and iMessage. I gain complete customization, a file system, easy email attachments and a gmail app with scalable fonts, default apps of my choice, a better widget and notification system, wireless charging, NFC, replaceable batteries, cheap SD card storage, etc. LG even had a promo for a free external USB battery charger and spare battery. I'm a first responder and the spare battery is handy during extended stays in the field.

I love Apple and their products. I moved to the Droid and G3 because I desperately wanted a bigger phone. I eventually found that Android offered me many features I'd never really thought of. When the 6+ came out, I did a side by side, and for the first time ever, wasn't even tempted to go stand in line for one... YMMV!

All of your points are good I must say, especially the integration with their products!

The 6+ would be way too big for my hands! I even tried it out at my local Super Target and I can barely hold it with one hand! But the G3 I can hold, probably because of it's form factor being different from the 6+. I also can go with a family member's line, as long as I pay for the phone myself, but then the contract..

That's one of the things that makes me look at Android phones: the ability to put in an SD card and replacing the battery myself.

I have heard good things about the Note 4, but then it comes down to the size. I wear tight jeans for work and outside now (getting colder in Minnesota). I wouldn't fully put it off though!

I can't quite do the 128GB one, but I might if I had the option now! I haven't filled up my iPod touch yet, so 64GB would probably suffice!

The G3 and other phones do have a good price point compared to the iPhone though, as you pointed out!

I thought about switching to the LG. I decided to stick with the iPhone. I got a 6+ 128gb. My wife switch a couple months ago to the LGG3 and saw my I6+ and was like I want one.

Plus the way my iTunes set up. LoL

I'll vote for the iPhone too being the owner of one, I know how good it is. My brother has recently got the LG G3 after a string of iPhones, he fancied a change. On first inspection it's a really nice phone, screen is great and seems very fluid. But he's starting to get a lot of glitches with it and is constantly asking for help on Facebook. He's only had it 5 weeks and has admitted he regrets not getting the iPhone 6. If you are not militant about customising and finding awkward tasks to test the phone, go with the iOS option. Just my 2 pence. Enjoy whatever

I have owned the G3 (4 of them in fact, too many issues). I now own an iPhone 6.

The G3 is a great phone on paper, however it has some weird issues that made it unreliable.

To start, the speaker phone gets loud, but people I called always complained of echo. My guess is LG didnt mute the mic all the way when someone else is talking. Second, the phone started out fine, but then always ended up having some sort of lag. Camera was ok, daylight pics were sometimes inconsistent/washed out. Low light pics however were really good.

The iPhone isn't perfect, but it does all necessary functions perfectly. The camera is awesome, even though its only 8MP. My only huge gripe with iOS is you can't set bluetooth profiles...kind of annoying.

Since you mentioned you listen to music, I'd recommend the iphone. It has a ton of headphone output, so it can even drive larger headphones.
