My Moto G died.
It was the G4 I think, I never really liked it.
I had a Nokia E75 before, that has a real keyboard,
I loved the Nokia but It has no use in the smartphone world.

I do most things on the computer(s).
3 mac pro's and an 8 core xeon windows for cuda.
13" macbook air
Imac
Macbook etc ...

Apps I use
Outlook
Onedrive
Instagram
FB messenger ( I don't really use it, It more like a beeper that I should check my computer )
Some app to facechat

I just broke up with my girlfriend so moved to my parents.
My mom just got an Ipad from my sister the normal one with 128gb I think It is?
It's the first touch device that I like

I make covers for vinyl records, fashion and product photography and with Corona I'm not making much or any money at the time.

I know know anything about Iphones, I think the 6 and the SE are the last ones with a headpone jack.
I have a cabled B&W P5 Series 2 I think and B&W PX with BT.
I prefer the wired one for cycling and on the road. The PX is amazing but more like wearing a bunker on your head I like it more for home use.

Anyway I need a new smartphone, because the Ipad was surprisingly more practical than any android device I have used.
I was thinking maybe a refurb 6 or SE, they are pretty cheap around a 100 euro's for a more used and around 200 for almost mint condition.
Are these still advisable to buy, I from the mac you can't install newest OS on older macs and most of my macs are on El Cap and something older on another boot drive. El Cap and High Sierra or just multiple High Sierra boot drives. I want to look into Mojave but I just got the windows thing.

I don't know how it is on the iOS front, drives an Iphone 6 the latest ios, does it matter if it doesn't and is it usable, same with the SE.
Does the 7 have something that would make it far more interesting? You can get a dongle for the headphone right?

And how about the cameras. Is there a model with a more interesting camera.
I don't take many cellphone pictures because It's my job, and I don't carry a camera all the time
but It can be practical to showthing stupid that you saw or for memory.

So if anyone has any advice. I Only know don't want 16GB
As Iphones don't use micro sd cards I guess.

Kind Regards

The iPhone 6s has a headphone jack. That’s the one I’d Go for. The 6 isn’t getting software updates anymore. The 6s is and may get iOS 14.

Here are my take on the older iPhones:
iPhone 6: not recommended. Last supported iOS was iOS12, and it has only 1GB of RAM.
iPhone 6s: Still performs great on iOS13, and will probably be supported through iOS14. Major weakness is its battery life.
iPhone SE 2016: Same internals as iPhone 6s, but inside iphone 5s shell.
iPhone 7: you lost headphone jack, but you gain IP67 rating and better battery life vs the 6s.

Depending on how much you can find them, I would avoid the 6. I would try getting at least the 6s/SE or later, depending on budget. Also, battery will be the biggest issue here, as the capacity is reduced as it ages. Either try getting as recent iPhone as your budget allows, or factor in battery replacement into your budget.

I think the oldest iPhone you should get is the 7, no headphone jack but worst case just use the adapter.

While the 6S is a generation behind the 7, for your needs, I think the 6S is a better choice. The iPhone 6 is usable but it gets frustrating on iOS 12 because of its 1GB of ram. And the 7 is a crapshoot. They have a checkered past with defective audio IC soldering that causes the telephone speaker not to work. Personally I would avoid a 7, even if it's a faster phone.

i would definitely choose the 7 for the water resistance that’s always a good feature and still getting updates

Either 6s or 7. Main issue on both is battery. Given the 6s is older and has a more power hungry chipset, I expect battery's a bigger issue on that model than on the 7.

This right here. 6s is one gen older than the 7 but the upgrade in performance is negligible. The 7 is most definitely a crapshoot. In addition there have been random battery issues with the phone. 6s is still a solid bet and will be a little cheaper than the 7. My son bought a 6s recently and is extremely pleased with it.

So no 6 at least the 6s.
( I asume the 6+ has better camera? )

So a 6s should be the best to try the iphone expercience.
Or SE as it is the same phone? But smaller screen.

How worse battery life are we talking.
Just to charge daily? Or worse. My android could do 3 to 5 days.
The Nokia E75 I'm using now, a week or more.
I'm not using it fulltime, a lot of the time It's just like a landline on my desk.

I'm not planning to use this phone for more than 6 months as my main phone.
Just want to try to iphone, as the latest ipad was somekind of surpise.
If I really like the Iphone, I would upgrade to a new SE I guess.
Or a 300 euro android. If there is no much difference ...

I would prefer the SE over the 6S if they are somekind of the same.
Don't know about the camera's in both phones.

And I also have no idea what the battery life if of a top refurbished iphone.
Most 6 of SE go from 100 euro's "usable" to 200 mintish condition.
On refurb site's.

With having the latest ipad. I don't mind a smaller screen.
I used a moto G or G2 for a while. They were also very pocketable.
I like pocketable but don't mind if It's in a bag I'm wearing.
I would prefer a small one or a bigger one.
So the SE or 6s ( maybe + ).

Maybe the SE and buy a bigger phone in the future.
Than I could always switch ...

I use It mostly as a beeper, not a pc replacement.
Good photo's would be nice. But I've always seen them as not that bad ...
It's not an Alpha R II or III, and has nothing on 50 pixels medium format.
But you don't always have those with you ... :)

I think I would go SE, do bigger ios things on Ipad,
it's a nice ipod if I would upgrade.

Thank you for you advice.

My sister uses the 6S and its still very snappy, on opening some apps it matches my 11. The 2GB of ram has helped the 6S age way better than the standard 6. I would avoid the 7 series like the plague.

We've got 3x iPhone 7s (before being replaced by 1x 11 and 2x SE). Apart from needing battery replacement, they're all working fine.

My mom charged her iPhone SE (2016) 2x a day (overnight and while at work). Battery was one of the reasons I upgraded her to the iPhone SE (2020).

She's a fairly light user - just phone calls and messages. She does get poor reception in her office building so the cell radios have to work harder.

Some of it depends on the condition of the battery. Any 6s that isn’t “new” or has had a battery replaced recently is going to be very close to needing it replaced. The difference between 100% battery capacity and 80% is very noticeable. I’d go for a 6s/SE or newer that is either new or has been refurbished with a new battery. I have a 6S with 85% battery capacity remaining and it’s tough to make it through the day with normal to heavy use. When it was new, I made it through a day, but not more.

The 6 is no longer supported by Apple with current software updates. The 6s runs iOS 13 just fine. The 6s was a big step up from the 6 as far as performance goes despite having the same form factor. The (original) SE is a 6s in a smaller case. I think it varies based on generarion of the Moto G, but my recollection is that it is more similar in size to the regular 4.7” iPhone series (6s/7/8/SE2) or slightly larger, and the original SE would be smaller as it is in the 4” iPhone 5 form factor.

I bought a new, unlocked SE in November from a seller on eBay (UK) for 131 Euros. Very pleased with it. He's still selling them – has a 32 GB for 157 Euros. Mine was the 16 GB. It was all I needed. The iOS is right up to date. YOu'd probably be able to sell it on in a few months if you were so inclined. Mine will hopefully keep me going for a couple of years. Great value for what I wanted and what I needed.

You can always replace the battery in an older iPhone if it’s otherwise in good condition. I think it’s $49 USD to do so with the 6s.

No signal bug with some 7

To clarify, that was only with various carriers that was actually occurring. For example, US cellular was seeing a higher volume of the ‘signal issue’ If the phone was being transferred over from another carrier. (As in, if the phone was sold to someone who wanted to use the phone on US cellular‘s network if they were on Sprint’s network prior.)

Oh, how is that possible? I know it's caused by a short which fires the modem, but locked and unlocked phones has the same modem and all the rest. How carrier change may affect it?

I’ve just bought an SE (2016). It won’t be my main phone. I have an 11 pro max but I thought it would be good to have a back up iPhone just in case anything happens to my phone and I have to send it in for repairs it gets stolen and I have to wait for it to be replaced under insurance. Also it would be nice to have to use in bed at night as my 11 pro max can get heavy sometimes. I’m also a sucker for for the 5S design but the 5S is way too old and doesn’t run iOS 13.
