I recently got an iPhone 6 (second-hand, so presumably out of warranty) and I'm having an issue.

After unlock the screen, after a few seconds, the screen begins to get obscured by lines appearing both horizontally and vertically, until it's full of white/black/blue lines. I have tried resetting the phone by holding down the power and home buttons, and I have tried restoring from iTunes on my MBP. Neither has resolved the problem

Underneath this issue, the phone still works, but it's impossible to know what's going on on-screen. This is temporarily rectified by locking the phone and unlocking it again, but then it does the same thing a few seconds later, even if I leave it on the lock screen.

I know someone who will fix the screen for me, but could someone explain what the heck is causing this? Is it a gpu/logic board issue, or a screen issue?

"second-hand" does not necessarily mean out of warranty. :D
The iPhone 6 has been sold only since September 2014, so yours will be less than 12 months, and still in the original warranty. There may be a different interpretation because of the warranty laws in Europe, but those should work in your favour.
You should take to an Apple store to see what they can do. Unless there is visible evidence of physical or liquid damage, you should have a good chance of getting it fixed at no charge.

Thanks for that, I'll ask the local reseller what the issue is and whether it can be fixed. The big issue is I need it for my trip in just over a week and I'll be gone for three weeks. Since I may have to take a job interview over the phone/over facetime, I really need it, and who knows how long they'll take.

If it is fixable under warranty, then an Apple Store would have the option to replace your iPhone, at which time you would be done within a few minutes, walking out with a replacement iPhone.
I think it would be unlikely that a reseller would have that option, but it won't hurt to ask, eh?

Guernsey? I guess a visit to an actual Apple Store is not quite convenient for you...

Yeah...the nearest thing we have is the authorised resellers.

I can make the point I'm taking a trip soon (volunteering, looking after big cats in S. Africa) and I'm applying for jobs at the moment, so not having a phone isn't an option.

Last time I went in this particular reseller though, they failed to diagnose the known GPU issue with the 2007 MBPs (where the NVIDIA GPU would give out in just a few years). They mysteriously found the issue and replaced the logic board free of charge instead of the £700+ they were quoting only after we told them Apple had recommended we go in and see them about it (they had).

If not, is there an Apple store in either Heathrow or Gatwick Airport? I'm going through both on my trip.

This is something that you can search out for yourself.
I DID find that there is a Curry's PC World, with an Apple Shop in the store, in Crawley, about 1.5 miles from Gatwick airport. I can't tell you if they would be able to do a warranty exchange.
Hopefully your local shop can help you out.

Ah, I'm unfortunately going straight from airport to airport. Oh well, either way I'll get it fixed; a friend of mine has the parts on standby, and won't charge much for the replacement. Always nice to try and get it for free first though!

Thanks for your help. :)
