iphone 6 won't ring or make any notification sounds

my iphone 6 has stopped making any alert sound notifications

it doesn't ring when a call comes in, nor does it make any of the other sounds that it once did for various events - receiving/sending text.., receiving/sending email, getting plugged in for charging, and so on.

it _can_ still make sound. if i go to the ring tones and select one, it plays the ringtone fine.

do not disturb is off

in settings > sounds, ringers and alerts volume slider is all the way up

in settings > notifications, mail, messages, and phone all appear to have sounds selected and on

what am i missing?

i have 11.0.1 - but it was not making sound even before the update

What about the side switch, is that perhaps set on silent/vibrate?

Have you tried restarting? What about resetting all settings?

i checked everything but the simplest thing...
