I got my iPhone 6S on release date.
From then until now i've had a couple of times where the phone has just died from say 40%. It's been approx 40% battery one minute, i've gone to use it a little later & it tells me to charge it, so i do, the phone turns on & i'm back at 40%.

Well i had my phone on me at work today & had been using it perfectly fine. The battery was somewhere between 60%-80%. I came to use it at the end of the working day & it's just a black screen.

I try to power it on & it doesn't even tell me to charge it - black screen.

I've had it plugged in to the mains for an hour now on 2 different cables - nothing, just a black screen.

My phones are always in good order. Otterbox case, screen protectors, never dropped, not put in anything wet.

Any idea on cause & solution?

I didn't buy AppleCare but i do have the receipt from purchase (which is obviously just 3 months old (or so)).

Is there no other solution?

Also all my private stuff is on that phone. To hand it over to someone to then gain access to? I don't like the idea of that.

Granted i need a phone & it may be the only way i can get one but what of my private stuff?

Also, without AppleCare will i have to pay, or because it's within the 12 month period will i get this for free?

Hmm we may have something.

I just held the power & home button for a while. I know this is something like DFU mode but i couldn't remember exactly how to, so i just held it for a bit & then let go of power button.

I got a symbol telling me to plug a lead in to the phone & the battery was red.

I then pressed the power button again & the battery symbol showed up with a little red on the left side of the battery.

Beforehand i was getting absolutely nothing whatsoever on the screen. No idea why holding those 2 buttons changed that after the phone being on charge for over an hour.

WOOHOO!! It worked. There is life.

Now i have a dilemma....

Like i said, this kind of thing has been happening a few times in a phone that is only 3 months old. I don't want this to continue/get worse. I don't want to get outside of the 12 month warranty & have it happen & it really wont turn on again no matter what because of a bad cell or whatever. £619 is a lot of money to shell out.

Are Apple likely to offer a replacement if i go to them with this problem & tell them it's happening a bit too frequently for a 3 month old phone?

If the phone is defective within the first year it will be replaced free. AC+ only extends the warranty period by a year and adds accidental damage and handling coverage.

So, you're covered by the basic one year warranty. Apple won't ask any questions and you won't be given any hassle over it.

Outside of the 1 year warranty Apple will give you the OoW (Out of Warranty) price. ~$350 is not a small chunk of change, but it's also only about a third or so the full price of a new phone.

As far as your data. Apple asks you to restore your phone as new before they do any work. That wipes your data. Typically, they'll tell you to make an iCloud backup before you do that though. That way when you get your new phone back you can restore from the backup and you have all your data back.

So, if this truly bothers you, make a backup either in iTunes (secure backup will store your passwords) or iCloud then restore the phone as new and take it to Apple.

Thanks.

The issue there is - let's assume the phone simply will not turn on. I can't then restore the phone as new.

Also, can i just turn up to my nearest (50 miles away) Apple store & tell them about this & get an exchange or do i have to book an appointment slot?

If that is the case then I wouldn't worry about your data. Apple is not in the habit of invading people's privacy and your phone would be just one of the many they get all at once to be stripped down immediately and refurbished. If the logicboard (after being tested) is still good the first thing that'll happen is a complete wipe and reassignment of IMEI, Serial number and MAC addresses. None of your data is going to survive that.

I would book an appointment. But you can also call them (Apple not the store), explain what is happening and ask for an exchange via mail.

Well i tried to make an appointment with my local store but it said no appointment slots any time soon.

So i went on to Apple chat (oh my god that is so incredibly slow!) and got the same result.

It wouldn't be so bad if they said there's no slots available soon ... but there's one in 4 weeks time if you'd like? But just to say there isn't one & i need to check back every day?

After tomorrow i will only be able to go to the store on a Sunday, no other day.

How can i possibly make an appointment?
