My plus on Wednesday suddenly for no reason got really, really hot at the back. I stopped using the phone & closed all apps. It took a number of hours for the phone to cool down. But ever since then my phone seems to burn through its battery much quicker than before this happened. Before this happened I could get the phone to last a whole day. But now I am having to re-charge by mid-afternoon.

Self proclaimed iPhone battery expert, I've had every battery issue in the book. The quickest thing you can do is restore, preferably start fresh, but one time I was having battery issues and I restored from an iCloud backup and my battery life still increased by 100%
If the restoration doesn't work out and you're using a legitamite charger, I might suggest battery diagnostic software. I had the pleasure of seeing just how messed up my iPhone 5 battery was thanks to ibackup bot which is a free OS X app that I downloaded online not off the App Store (not sure if it's on App Store.) It is questionable looking but I have been using it for over a year and had no issues so I think it's legit. Anyway it has an information section that provides battery health information (I am including a picture of what it will tell you.)
If you want to spend 4 dollars for convenience, download the iOS battery health app in the App Store. It will show you cycle count, max charge capacity, current system reported battery charge and actual battery charge (actual and system can vary A LOT) and even detect whether or not a charger is Apple certified.
Don't hesitate to ask me if you have any questions because I know way more about this than I ever would have liked to learn.

If you have a Mac - try coconutBattery - I use that to find out the charge cycles, battery health of my iPhone. Find out what your % of capacity from design is - that's the key % value.

I find every 5+ months that I need to calibrate my iPhone 6+ - when I notice the % dropping far faster than usual, I'll do a drain till the phone turns off, then charge it back up. I notice on coconutBattery that the % of capacity from design goes up after that and the phone stays at 100% a lot longer. My iPhone spends 99.9999% of it's life between 60% and 100%. After 212 cycles I have 98.8% of design capacity left.

I've been doing some initial investigation on my phone. First thing I found was background app refresh had been turned on, I could have sworn I turned that off. Don't know if that's something that gets turned back on with the updates of iOS. Other thing I found was by far the biggest users of my battery in the last seven days have been Tapatalk followed by Safari. Safari I can kind of understand a bit but I wouldn't say I used Tapatalk as much as the battery usage suggested & wondered if I am going to keep having to kill it in the background.
