iPhone 7+ only one lens working?

I am probably dumb, but I cannot figure this out and I could not find any posts about it. When I cover the left camera with a finger and click the 2x button in the camera app, it zooms but doesn't switch lenses. No matter that I click, it does not use the second camera lens. Am I doing this wrong? I feel so dumb right now.

So I got my iPhone 7Plus (Silver 256GB) set up and noticed the dual camera is not working as advertised.

If I put my finger over the telephoto lens and tap the 2x, it zooms in, but it looks grainy and isn't dark like when I put my finger over the wide angle lens It's obviously using the wide angle lens when I use the tap 2x zoom or pinch on video, photo, and square. It only toggles to the telephoto on Time Lapse, Slo-Mo, and Pano.

I had to update my phone before I could restore from a back up. Not sure if that would have anything to do with it.

Also my phone is pretty warm from downloading apps for the last couple of hours and I can't use flash while in the camera app or use the flashlight period. I see the icon in the camera app ❗️ Of the exclamation mark inside a triangle. It says my phone needs to cool down beige I can use flash.

I just checked my 7+ 256 Gold and it also doesn't work on video, photo & square.

My apologies for making you repeat yourself. I could not find this information online. It seemed strange I could take a photo with the lens covered. Thank you for the link, I appreciate it.

Sorry for making you repeat your self, but the guy who wrote the article was wrong about a the flash, and I feel like use of the two lenses as he described is not what's going on for me and many others.

The new flash does not have "Four color temperatures"
It has two, but with 4 LED's for more light.

If it were to use both when I take a picture,

I should notice the effects of having something like a finger in front of one lens. No matter if I'm in 1x or 2x there is no effect to me covering the telephoto lens. Where as if I cover the wide angle, in both 1x or 2x it's messing up both times.

Also, in the modes it seems to work like Pano, Slo-Mo, and Time Lapse, when you tap the 2x or 1x, the camera blue for a second as it switches between the two. Much like when you change from photo to video.
Lastly in Slo-Mo, 1x will only let you zoom to 3x by pinching and 2x will let you zoom to 6x by pinching. However in Video, I can pinch from 1x to 6x and 2x to 6x. Photo I can pinch from 1x to 10x and 2x to 10x.

Running some tests this morning and the picture quality of 2x just looks like a cropped photo, bad quality and not sharp at all. It doesn't look like a longer focal length. I think I am going to contact apple about this.

This does not seem correct to me.

Stopped at an Apple Store this morning. All the floor models seamed to show this same issue intermittently. My phone seams to also work occasionally. Landscape mode working more than portrait.

I grabbed one of the Apple employees and showed it to her. She was able to recreate the problem on her device so she called to someone at HQ and talked to them. After a long discussion it seams to be affecting a great deal of phones intermittently. He asked her to get my device information and take some video of the issue.

It looks to be a software issue and hopefully will be patched via update.



I recommend if you see this happening, take your phone to apple and report it. The more reports and information Apple gets, it should be easier and quicker for them to diagnose and fix.

Same with mine. Covering up the telephoto lens on 2x does nothing to the picture. And the 2x photos, regardless whether or not the telephoto lens is covered or not, are terrible quality and simply look like a cropped photo

I saw that article. Even in a well lit environment, the lens will sometimes switch and sometimes won't.
Hopefully they change the algorithm to allow for a smoother experience.

I did! Great article. Unfortunately all of my photos have been in well lit situations. I haven't had a chance to test it in low light situations
