iPhone 7 plus not using telephoto lense

i was playing around with the camera and noticed that the 2x zoom looked grainier. So I decided to cover up each lense and see which lense it was using. Turns out it only uses de regular lense. Does it not work that way? I'm confused at the moment. It it supposed to work that way or is it faulty. 2x zoom seems to be digital.

It intelligently switches when the light is right. Since the telephoto has such a narrow aperture it will shoot through the wide angle if lighting conditions are poor. Go outside and you will find it shoots through the telephoto.

I was going to start a thread on this last night. I put my finger over the second camera and nothing happened when I went to 2x! I figured it must be based on available light and it turned out I was right.
