Strongly considering pushing the upgrade button from the iPhone 7 to the XR.

I’m very much used to using a smaller lighter iPhone (3GS -> 4S -> 5s -> 7) and I’m worried that I’m just not going to get on with the increase size & weight of the XR compared to the 7.

So I’m interested in hearing from any others who’ve made the jump from a smaller phone to the XR and how they’ve got on (both positive and negative).

PS. I am also considering the XR now that the Apple monthly financing payments are so good, however I’m put off by the OLED - that screen is searingly bright for me and I’m a little worried that I’m one of those PWM intolerants.

The XR is not OLED, so it's my understanding that there aren't any PWM issues. As to size, I think that most people adjust fairly quickly to the larger size, and some like the larger screen. That said, it you're a person who likes to put your phone in your back pocket, the size might be an issue for you.

Really the best way to find out if a new phone is best for you is just buy it with the intention of returning it within 14 days to get a full refund.
If you go that route, don't use the accessories in the box, don't peel off the protective plastic film either and keep it immaculate (Maybe wear gloves).

Hmmm...
  • The Xr is LCD.
  • The brightness is adjustable.
  • There’s a 14-day return window.

I went from 7 to Xr. Got used to the size and weight difference in about 2 hours YMMV. It’s not the same as the plus models of the 7&8 those are just freakishly large.

Went from the 6 (the thinnest iPhone ever) to the XR and that is quite a difference regarding size and weight. Still have to adjust to it but the batterie life of the XR is so amazing that I am willing to accept it. Most of the time I am phoning with my AirPods on so this is only a problem when carrying it around...

The XS was no alternative because it is also bigger and heavier (and much more expensive) but did not improve the display width compared to the 6.

I think the biggest adjustment will probably be the overall heft/size of the XR compared to the 4.7 iPhone 7. If It was me, I would just take advantage of the 14 day return policy, see how you adjust to the phone, is the size manageable for you, ect. Like all things, when you just to something larger, it takes time for you to become accustomed to a new form factor like the XR. But I think the trade-off is worth it with the battery life, true tone, wireless charging, Face ID is an entirely different experience, ect.

Thanks to everyone who’s replied on this thread - I really appreciate it. I think that the choices that Apple has made this year for its phones (size, screen type & pricing) means that it's not been as clear cut as previous years to make a decision.

The size and weight of my phone does matter quite a bit to me - however, I guess it’ll be similar to upgrading from my SE to my 7. Initially I was worried about the size (which seems funny to write now in the age of jumbo smartphones!) and adjusted quite quickly. I guess humans are good at that.

Thanks again.
