iPhone 7Plus- How do I turn off text notification tones?

I have a iPhone 7Plus, and only now did I find out that turning off the ringer on the left side, does not turn off text notifications. I always turn off the ringer when appropriate (meetings, etc.), and out of 4 years of owning the phone, I never received a text notification when the ringer was off.

So the other day I was in a meeting, and the text notification "tone" goes off. The only ways I can figure out to turn it off, is to either go in to settings and turn it off, or go into Airplane mode.

What am I missing the obvious here; why doesn't turning the ringer button off, also shut off other notification tones.

Is there anyway to set the ringer button to turn off all sounds?

Was it in relation to a particular contact sending you a message? There are options for individual contacts to enable emergency bypass for them so that calls and messages for them would go through even when the phone is set to silent or DND.

Thank you so much for the quick response which solved my issue. Yes, my wife was sending me a text.

She is listed as my emergency contact, and the text tone was enabled. I shut the text notification off in her contact form; however, I did leave on the phone call ring.
