Does anyone know why an iPhone set to automatically update iOS would do so?

My Dad has an iPhone 8 and earlier this year I found his iPhone was still on iOS 14.6 (not even the latest version). I checked his phone and it was set to update automatically but for some reason it never did in over a year. I had him update to iOS 16.2 (which was the only option at the time) which worked fine.

Recently I checked again and his phone was still on 16.2 even though it’s set to auto-update.

He says he turns his phone off at night, but I figured it would update when he charges it.

Any ideas?

I think that in order to auto-update, you need to confirm before every update by typing in your passcode. It should bring up a screen at night, when you plug it in, saying that the phone will auto-update between x:xx am - x:xx am. And then it gives you a passcode field.

I normally force an update and get the prompt, but I was under the assumption of auto-updates were enabled that wouldn’t be needed.

In this case though the update never downloads and he’s never prompted.

Like I mentioned he turns his phone off every night so if update only downloaded at night that would explain why, but my understanding is they can update any time the phone is plugged in. As such I don’t know why his phone never updates.

He doesn’t even get the “1” badge on settings that there is an update.
