Run into Macs4u's thread from an online article:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/iphone-8-plus-delivered-gap-between-glass-and-sides.2070456/

Went checkout my iPhone 8 Plus and found exactly the same issue as he described. On my phone there is an obvious gap on front and top-left also in the back. A small gap on front lower-right also in the back. Attached a few pictures that show the issue and the comparison of front top-right and front lower-left where the glass/frame seal looks good.

It appears to me the cause of the gap is that the aluminum frame is not a perfect rectangular.

You may not see much of a gap if viewing these pictures from a cellphone, but the gap is there. I can even cramp the frame to slightly narrow the gap. If I shine a light into the gap I can see the sealing material. No confidence on how waterproof this phone will be.

My old iPhone 6 Plus has much better build quality, no gaps on glass and frame seal. It probably benefited from a unibody design instead of the new screen+frame+glass back design. Other then the gaps issue, absolutely like my new iphone.

big problems...remember your 6 plus if you try to bend it, is not even a try, you just bend it, so what about quality there?
enjoy your phone, these little things are all over the products, look at a brand new mercedes e/s class, look even on an helicopter you will notice, they do have these little "issues" and they cost a lot more

On my 7 plus when I got it in March the right side had a gap big enough to fit a few pieces of paper and the sharp metal was annoying just return it like I did.

My second phone has come faulty (had no charge in and won't charge).

Apple quality has gone rubbish. I could rant all day about things that I have had faulty but not going to waste my breath. I will say one thing though.. I am studying a degree in Music Production at University and they are mysteriously going PC only next year with the reasoning that they are fed up things going wrong. What has happened Apple.

Yes, I see what you're talking about. The ones I checked out at the store didn't look like that. You should return it. That's more than a cosmetic defect I think. Due to impact on water resistance. A case will not help.

Edit: I just saw JerryRigEverything's drop video and scratch video. He said the IPhone was very well constructed and there is a plastic cushion (like a gasket) between the glass and frame for cushioning. I'm not sure what conclusions to draw from that regarding the gaps you're seeing but just thought I'd let you know there is something there you might be seeing in the gaps.

I agree he should return it, it is a cosmetic defect, i am sure it will not affect function of the phone. Gaps shouldn't affect functionality of the product.

A gap that large, I would get it exchanged.

I’m not entirely convinced that it’s there for cushion. It’s very difficult to get to hard materials to meet and so a plastic gasket is commonly used.

I had a similar gap on my iPhone 8 out of the box. I even had remnants of of dried glue/sealant visible in the gap (some residue was also visiable on the metal frame, which I wiped off with my finger). I took it to the Apple store and they swapped it out immediately. I was told that no gap should be present and that it was an obvious defect.

My new unit has no gap whatsoever.

Good luck!

When I first checked out the iPhone 8 at the Apple Store, most the white models had this issue, and you could feel a sharp edge where the edge meets the glass. None of the space gray models had this issue.

When I picked up my X I checked it for this issue before accepting it. I suggest you exchange it for another phone, and check the new phone before leaving the store.

Apple told me the gap was normal when I took mine to them which exhibited the same problem. The display model I tested exhibited the same problem. They said that it should not affect waterproofing though.

Nothing to do with budget. This is a very cash rich place. We have a system where if you go into a studio and something is faulty you can log it and the maintenance people get it and fix it. You can also log in after to see if it's been fixed. Last time I looked there was 6 reported faults. 4 of them were Apple Mac's. 1 was a slider had come off a pioneer controller and 1 was a sound issue. The place has probably Mac/PC 70/30 so a considerable amount of Windows computers also. Can't remember the last time I saw an issue with a PC on the system.

I have gaps just like this on my iPhone 6. But my iphone is already three years old, and it flew on the ground countless times.

Take it back to store and demand a new one. apple is always so full of words about perfection so this shouldn't be an issue with them.
