I was switching the SIMs in my husband's new 12 mini (from his 8) and by accident, put the tray from the 8 upside down in the 12 mini slot. It is now sticking out about 1/8" out and won't budge. I tried putting a card in but there isn't enough room to slide it in. Any thoughts, or am I done for?

Try to grab onto it with pliers to pull it out.. If it doesn't come out without excessive force not sure what you can do. Unfortunately sometimes something like this becomes a learning experience.

I wouldn't do that. With the tray in upside down. The card may be catching on something.

I'd use something much weaker like good tweezers. Then very gently wiggle the tray in and out. While tapping on the iPhone with your fingers. Trying both face up and face down orientations.

There isn't a card in the tray, it is just the tray that is stuck.

The card was never installed...

Even just the tray. If it's stuck. You don't know what it is stuck on. Force plus delicate electronics is never a good idea.

Maybe it's just wedged a little. Maybe it's catching something. You just don't know. I'm just advising you be very cautious in how you remove it.

I agree, @velocityg4 . I have been gently wiggling it all day; it is really stuck on something in there good. Going to take it in today.

If it’s inserted upside down, there’s a good possibility it might catch the SIM contacts, especially since iPhone 12 has the contacts inverted compared to iPhone 8.
