The iPhone 8 will be smaller, lighter, likely $100 cheaper, have force touch and an apparently similar camera

6.1” LCD will have FaceID, newest processor, bigger screen due to reduced bezels

Both of these phones will likely run the same for a number of years

In all honesty the 8 may be the better buy. Obviously we will have to bump this thread in a few weeks to really know

Are we sure the 6.1 doesn't have 3D Touch? Also, will the 6.1 have 3gb ram verse the 2gb found in the 8?

To me 6.1 lcd would be better buy, reasons below:

: bigger screen
: Face-I’d
: More future proof
: better camera
: longer battery life
: More color options than 8

The 6.1" has:
  • A12
  • 3GB RAM
  • 4x4 MIMO and Gigabit LTE
  • 2,800 or 2,900 mAh battery (vs. 1,800 mAh on iPhone 8)
It blows the iPhone 8 out of the water in every other metric, except it may have software simulated 3D Touch.

If the difference is $100, a consumer would have to be crazy to buy iPhone 8.

But is that how the consumer is going to view the iPhone 8 as a ‘better’ buy in comparison to the 6.1 LCD iPhone? They’re going to see a new form factor and Face ID Versus a year old iPhone 8, and; The 6.1 LCD iPhone is rumored to start approximately around $700–$750, Which is very competitive and tempting to those who may be interested.

The iPhone 8 looks pretty dated visually even compared to many cheaper Android phones which are also sporting bigger screens etc. I mean it is after all a repackaged 2014 design. I can't see many buying the iPhone 8 range until it gets discounted a lot compared to the 6.1" model.

8 or 8 plus?

iPhone 8 models will be keepers for years, but it is possible the 6.1 will have a significantly improved camera and due to size and the A12 chip, improved battery life - definitely over the small 8. I think screen (and design) will be the main driver for regular consumers though.

Exactly my point. I think the new form factor coupled with a tempting price point is going to be huge marketing for this new 6.1 LCD iPhone. I have a feeling Apple is going to emphasize this during the fall Keynote with the 6.1 LCD iPhone greatly. Once the consumer starts seeing more and more of this new form factor with the 6.1/5.8/6.5 iPhone X, it will just push the iPhone 8 deeper into extinction, even though I still think the 8 is very relevant with tech specifications.

Allegedly the 8 was the best selling model in recent months, so it is getting bought now. Not sure that changes much in a few months

I was considering the LCD phone, but the lack of a dual camera is a limitation. I may go for the updated x or just keep my 8+ instead

Since phone size is measured on a diagonal on the screen, this is my prediction:

The iPhone X Plus will have the same chassis dimensions as the iPhone 8, just a longer screen where the bezels used to be.

The 6.1 LCD model will be a little smaller, and the next X will be the same size as today's X.

I think you need to ask yourself these questions:

Are you somebody who has to have the latest iPhone every year?

Do you have to have the latest iPhone to impress your peers?

Is the 6.1” LCD iPhone going to have features that are must haves over your iPhone 8+?

To me it sounds like you’ve got a really good iPhone as it is. An iPhone 8+ is going to be a good and cool smartphone for at least the next 2 years and is still going to be popular. I would save your cash if I were you but that’s just my opinion. It’s your money. :)
