IPhone Activation - No Service?

So my Father is a bit Computer retarded, especially when it comes to anything related to apple (hes used microsoft his whole life)

he recently got his new 3Gs and says he activated it (he made it through the first iphone activation) so i doubt he made an error there, but after letting it sit for a little over a day (mainly because AT&T says it can take up to 48Hrs to activate) his Iphone still says No Service. did he do somethign wrong? is the Iphone not configured properly? of is it AT&T not activating it yet?

If the phone needs activating, it will say on the screen, and you wont be allowed in any of the menus.

There is a picture of iTunes and a arrow on the screen.

Once activated you can use the phones features, and should get signal.

This is what mine did anyway.

If it says no service and he can get to the home screen it's been activated but there is either no service in his area or his phone is not working correctly.
