I got the iPhone Air on release day and I wanted to put my thoughts forward after a month of usage. The first thing to say is there is no right answer to this - it may be a phone for you or it may not be, both options are fine. But this could be useful for someone on the fence to decide to go for the Air or not. I did want to write this in some detail because it's a significant change of hardware in years.

Why iPhone Air?

I have always got what I considered the 'biggest and baddest' iPhone since the larger screen options were available from the iPhone 6. But in the recent few years the pro maxes have been feeling a bit too big for me. I realized (for me) the idea of a mobile phone is something easy to use especially on the move. I would have downsized to the pro model for sure this year if it wasn't for the Air. I also love thin and light devices. Also since the iPhone Air had most of the features from the pro, I decided to preorder and buy.

First Impressions and Feel

A month in, I am still constantly examining and admiring the air, checking the thinness and side profile. My other iphones (even the xs) feel noticeably thicker now. Only a handful of devices have had this effect for me over the years, e.g. my ultra thin laptop, oled tv, iPhone 4 and my Sony PSP from my childhood to name a few. You could probably tell I am a fan of product design and it matters to me - it may or may not for you.

The reaction from others is also quite telling. As soon as I pass the phone to someone who hasn’t felt it, there’s always a genuine pause. I don’t remember a phone doing that to people since the first iphones.

Now it's not just the thinness - it's the improved usability. The light and thinness has made the phone a lot easier to use one handed, especially over my pro max which feels like a brick now. I'm able to reach a lot more screen area. It actually feels like a product from the Steve Jobs era for the first time in years.

It's also much easier to use when I'm out and about. Taking the phone out through the day, when sitting or in tight public spaces, taking less space in my pocket (I don't use a case) - it's in those settings where it's made such a big difference for me. I would probably even prefer if they made an Air the same size as the pro.

iOS, Usability and Camera

The latest ios feels buttery smooth on the latest iphones. They’ve added lots of little touches which makes the non native apple apps feel a bit dated. And this is from someone who isn’t always impressed with a ‘new coat of paint’ type updates. I think is more impactful with the air as it really feels like a thin slab of liquid glass.

The screens really nice - I'm glad it's the same screen as the pro, the photos are also a noticeable improvement. The single camera is great and the photos from the reviews I've seen as well as my brother's 17 Pro, seem pretty much identical. The performance is great and that's expected as it's the same chip as the 17 pro (bar one gpu core which makes no difference to me).

Compromises

Second Camera

The single camera is great and as I said already pretty much identical to the other 17 models. The lack of the telephoto lens and macro photography is something I very rarely used. Sure it's a shame it's not there but it doesn't matter enough to me. I'm not a big picture taker and the standard 2x zoom on the air fits my needs.

Single Speaker

This was something that I noticed immediately the day I got it. It did bother me at first as I went from a pro max to a single speaker. However, after a month in, it's not something I notice any more. I would certainly prefer to get it back in a future air model but it’s no deal breaker.

Battery

This is without doubt the biggest issue that I've seen so far with the air. Going from a pro max large battery to the thin battery of the air has definitely been something I've felt. All the tests from reviews and my own usage points to me saying the battery life is good but not great. The reviews show it's about 10% less than the iPhone 17 so you can take that as you will.

I am a light-medium user. Whatsapp, Youtube, browsing, banking, snapchat, some social media, facetime, google maps etc. For my usage, I am getting through a whole day with a lot of on screen time so it's not a problem. Sure, in my pro max, I would come back home after a long day out and there would be plenty of battery life still. As I'm not a heavy user, this hasn't changed my usage. I can still do what I need to do and when I need to do it without needing a battery pack. Maybe I could describe it as acceptable battery life instead of good, but it's certainly not terrible or bad.

A concern could be in 1-2 years when the battery health goes down say 10% or so, capacity will be lower. A relative of mine recently sent his air back and got the pro max because he travels a lot and needs the battery - and that's absolutely fine and correct for him.

Concern about the future

There have been mixed articles about the air about it's future. I really hope Apple don't cancel this phone like other models. Air models have sold quite well in other Apple product lines and maybe their second generation of iPhone Air, with newer battery tech, second camera and second speaker means it attracts a lot more people.

I would be really disappointed if it was discontinued. This phone with it's form factor has actually made a difference to my experience of a mobile phone. It's practical to use, retains most of the pro features and feels great in the hand.

Would be interested to hear how other air users are getting on after a month.

Extremely happy with mine. I feel the same way I did when the minis came out. So far haven't been bothered by any of your listed compromises. Battery seem the same as my 16 Pro. Havne't missed the ultra wide lens yet, and I never use the external speaker, thought honestly the one in the Air seems fine. I mainly use AirPods. It's really a fantastic phone for people who value light weight and holdability so kudos to Apple. I just hope they don't drop it due to poor sales. They need to advertise it because I don't think people even know about it!!

Yes I think my issue was going from a pro max to the air - the battery was going to noticeable. Even the pro would have felt a lot less. However, Apple said all day battery life and that's what I'm getting.

Our phones are probably one of the, if not the, most used devices we have during the day. An ultrathin lightweight phones makes even more of a difference just going by the frequency of usage. It has really made a difference.

I returned the Air after two weeks of use, as I found myself trying to justify the experience despite not being genuinely satisfied. Retaining the Air would have still required me to carry my S25U, which diminished the convenience I was hoping for. Considering the combined cost of the Air and the additional battery pack, opting for the PM proved to be a more practical and worthwhile choice. The Air’s only real advantage was its form factor and lightweight design.

Ultimately, I chose the 17PM and have been genuinely satisfied with the decision.

Absolutely fair enough. With your usage, I assumed the air was running out of juice before the end of your day.

This is something I’ve had to adjust to. The air made me realize I’ve never had to think about battery ever until now. With all my previous phones plus/pro max etc, battery life was good and just kept getting better every year. Now, although it lasts a day, it is something i have to keep an eye on.

While it's certainly not a bad phone, Apples greed is very obvious. Overpriced, lacking a comparable feature set to its competitor the Samsung S25 Edge, leaves iPhone Air looking like an also ran.

Hands down the Air is my favourite iPhone since I first used the iPhone X back in 2017.
I did try a 17 Pro as well but I went back to the Air and I’m really enjoying it.

I’ve said in a few threads now about having carpel tunnel and hand surgeries. The Air is super comfortable to use and I still have the wow factor when I pick it up and the premium slim design is a treat for the eyes also.

Performance is obviously incredible with the A19 Pro paired with 12GB of RAM.

Battery life is surprisingly good and much better than the battery capacity would have you believe (very close with the 17 Pro I also tried)

The single camera whilst lacking in areas is superb and I’ve got some amazing shots. I like the multiple focal lengths with 26mm, 28mm & 35mm on the 1x and the 2x work very well. The ability to take portrait shots of any subject is also excellent.

The single speaker is a none issue. It’s loud and clear and perfectly good for watching some YouTube videos etc.

Overall I really love my space black Air, I think the form factor is a great piece of design with how it looks and how it feels in the hand with the beautiful 6.5” display.

Time will tell how it holds up but so far using it naked (the only way for the Air) it’s still immaculate with no marks on it.

I don't understand apple. They cancel the mini and plus models d/t poor sales. Those two did not receive visible ad support. Now there are reports the air is not selling well, however all the commercials are the ORANGE "PRO" model. When I was in Taiwan, all i saw was "PRO". The pro commercials are everywhere. So I don't understand the disconnect of apple hardware team, marketing and the executives making the decision.

Oh well if it is a two year model, then there you go. I'll enjoy this phone regardless like I did with my 12 mini and 13 mini. I don't need apple's advertising to validated my purchase decision. It's just a shame the history is repeating itself.

The air really is a beautiful phone.

I have the Air and love it. It was an easy choice for me as I love the form factor and its compromises don't affect my use case. My last phone was the 16 Pro and I find the battery life of my Air almost identical to the 16 Pro. In spite of that, all the comments about the Air's poor battery life have made me more concerned about battery per cent when going out in the evening, which is what spending too much time here has caused. 😁 My only real concern about the Air is that it may be discontinued next year.

for people who value thin, light, and superb design, its a great phone.
for people who value a large screen, its a creditable phone.
for people who want cameras-galore, its a non-starter.

for apple, the value in launching the iPhone Air is all about getting real world feedback in preparation for the iPhone Fold. specifically to get the retail pricing correct and develop marketing strategy.
additionally, the Air is giving real world data on: retail price elasticity. repair rate. real life battery data. Ceramic Shield actual protect-ability. consumer profile data by age and income. 12GB RAM & A19 5Core performance and heat characteristics. reliability of C1X chip for cellular data. performance data for N1 chip for Bluetooth and Wi-fi. and perfecting its battery management.

if all goes well. we could be pleasantly surprised that the iPhone Fold, rumored to be USD 2,000+ retail, could come in nearer to USD 1,799.

my own battery performance using the Air:
im setting a charging limit at 85%.
im a medium to heavy user and have between 30% and 20% left at 20:00 each night.
but this kind of battery life is being achieved only after i began to see that actual talk time on the Air is my biggest battery killer.
for days where i am having an especially intensive period where im making more than 2 hours+ of phone calls, then i have begun to attach the MagSafe battery for the Air for the couple hours im on the phone talking.
in this case, when the MagSafe battery is attached only during my heavy call time, my battery at 20:00 is about 50% remaining (with having set the maximum charge at 85%).

i have been using the Air since September 27. cycle count is 12 as of yesterday.
pretty good. actually, pretty impressive.

im looking forward to late autumn early winter hiking to see how the Air's battery holds up in near freezing outdoor temperatures.

Sadly, people tend to jump on a bandwagon online.
The bandwagon for the Air is that its somehow a compromise too far and not worth it.

However, when people actually use it - youll find that most owners genuinely love it.

I, too, moved from a history of Pro Maxes to the air - my reasons were the unwieldy size, weight, and this year I dont want a pro thats made of aluminium - its one of the reasons I paid more for the pros in the past to avoid aluminium phones....

The big 3. Battery, Speaker, Camera..... these are mentioned over and over again.
They are only downsides if you a) have a social media or YouTube channel you want to promote and jump on the bandwagon of hate for clicks and views or b) you genuinely are a higher end user that uses cameras professionally.

Cameras, to me, are not that relevant. Sure, you have a lot more controls in the pros but ive always been a point and press type of picture taker and it's not really relevant to me to have controls and options I rarely used. I dont care if that means now I 'only' have a single lens.

The dual speaker - UTTERLY irrelevant. Firstly the single speaker sounds a LOT better than many people seem to think it does. Secondly, I would never watch a TV show or movie on my phone - and IF I did then theres no way I would attempt doing so without headphones in - Im one of those rare people nowadays who seems to still have consideration for those around me in public and would never subject anyone to loud audio from my device regardless.

Battery life - genuinely since settling into my usual daily routine and the novelty has worn off - the phone easily gets me to the end of the day with approximately 20% charge remaining. Sure theres been a handful of days when its teetering on 10% or less at 9pm and I feel the need to do a 10 minute top up to make it through the last couple of hours but thats few and far between AND my 16 Pro Max behaved in the same way sometimes not lasting a day too.

An additional bonus is heat - my 16 pro max often ran HOT on the back and thats with its supposed improvements thermally than the 15 had.... the Air has never got even warm for me and thats running the same software and the same games that I did on the 16.

Stories of its 'unpopularity' are im sure just clickbait supporting someones personal agenda who doesnt like the phone due to the perceived big 3 'deficiencies' however its a month in - way too soon to tell and didnt China sell out completely in minutes??? Does that sound like a phone thats failing?

Ive always believed that device is a personal choice and whats right for one person isnt right for another. If you want a pro get a pro. If you want a base 17 get a base 17. Dont tell someone they made the wrong choice just because its not something you personally would have chosen.
Personally speaking, Im 100% happy with my air, I appreciate its size, shape, and weight and it's a huge upgrade for me in those terms.

False.

It's not important for you, which is fine. But you are absolutely incorrect that its only for those 2 reasons and it doesn't mean people who disagree with you hopped on a bandwagon.

In just that brief snippet of your "review", you said "I", "I've" or "me" 5 times.

I didn't read the rest of your review after that because I can see you're just going to be condescending and try to spread the effects of main character syndrome.

“product from the Steve Jobs era for the first time in years” THIS, i feel it exactly same, this is iphone Steve would love
Nostalgia is funny. Yeah, Steve was obviously critical to Apple's success but he had his own flops and bad ideas. iPod Socks anyone?

I’ve had my Air for two weeks now with very little complaint.
The design is an absolute delight, I found a case that only covers the back to protect the camera bump but leaves the sides and front completely exposed, and it works wonderfully. The thing literally feels like a modern update of the old iPod touch design, it is just shockingly easy to hold with some of the best weight distribution of any iPhone ever.
The single speaker was a tad concerning on day one, I don’t even notice it anymore. I listened to plenty of YouTube and podcasts through it with no issue.
The battery performs even better than my previous 15 Pro Max, going off of the over-the-top reactions online you would have thought that we were reverting to iPhone 6 level battery life but nope, thing keeps up with pretty much any iPhone released within the last four years.

It very much feels like a reset, this will likely within two years become the new “default” iPhone for most. Not quite yet but it very much feels that Apple is starting to put the steps into motion to phase out the regular iPhone number, the Way they phased out the regular MacBook as the MacBook Air got better and better and became the new default.

True.

Also, to point out, someone expressing an opinion .... yes, an opinion as this is a discussion forum, is NOT "condescending" just because their opinion differs from yours.

You do you... as they say. I couldnt care less.

I feel the iPod touch had a far superior design, thinness and lightness to it compared to the iPhone Air. I always asked myself why Apple never continued to build-on that design direction, maybe the iPhone Air is the end result of it I am not sure but that iPod Touch always had me pleasantly surprised and looking forward to hold and use that device. The way the rear casing aluminum curved around the edge to couple with the glass front was a beautiful design, no metal band around the edge like the iPhone Air just two simple materials Aluminum and Glass unlike the iPhone Air Glass, Titanium and Glass. I understand why Apple had no choice for the glass back it was due to MagSafe but it just hold this second place in a thin handheld device behind the iPod Touch.

My sentiments exactly. I’ve never taken time to visibly admire this phone everyday. It’s like holding your content. I’ve never experienced anything close to this. Maybe the iPhone X? The air isn’t going anywhere, just like the iPad Air and MacBook Air. Apple spent serious R&D into the Air. The comparison to the plus and mini is disingenuous, they were just smaller/bigger of an existing model. This is a whole new product. Hence the iPhone Air name. Those that relish in the hopeful demise of the Air are just advertising that they themselves actually want one. The air is here to stay and I’m excited for the next one.

It's only natural for those who bought the air to defend it. Nobody likes to admit defeat.

While it's certainly not a bad phone, Apples greed is very obvious. Overpriced, lacking a comparable feature set to its competitor the Samsung S25 Edge, leaves iPhone Air looking like an also ran.

Apple buyers know what comprises an outstanding iPhone and this isn't it.
Apple continues to reduce items in its products and raises prices and sits back laughing at all those who are reinforcing its greed and doing its customers a disservice while those who are mesmerized by the RDF will claim everyone who does not agree with them are haters. Fast-forward a few years when the entire iPhone line gets neutered and these same customers will claim Apple is not innovating. Since when did innovation mean removing things is beyond my understanding, to me it was to make something better while either retaining the same functionality or improve upon it. One less camera, one less speaker, battery that will probably age faster which will mean either land fill, expensive battery replacement or trade-in.

Make no mistake the iPhone Air is designed as a disposable product that will cost more but the gullible customer who defend it have fallen into Apple’s marketing trap.

Do you defend you ugly your Pro is? We aren’t defending the Air, we are stating how the compromises aren’t really compromises for us. So we prefer a better looking phone.

The pro is a heavy ugly looking phone. I don’t have need for the 8x zoom. mmWave. Lidaar sensor. Wide photo lens. The single speaker is not an issue as I use my AirPods all the time. The battery is nice but my air is the same as my 16pro which was good for me. So I chose the better looking and lighter phone with a larger larger screen then my pro. And the air is cheaper. So… that’s that.

You people are a joke. I wanted something that looked stunning and was lighter. The Pro is an ugly tank.
