I wouldn’t want to put it on Max all the time because it can blow out the speaker. With it being the only speaker, it can be a problem long term.

I found this too. It seems to be more noticeable when someone is talking in a video or when i was talking to someone on Facetime. I was just going to return it but AT&T offered an exchange and said if it was the same then I could still return it for a refund so I decided to try an exchange first to see if it was just a defect with the first one.

After reading this thread, it seems it is an issue with all of them and not just a defective unit I got.

Did your replacement device also have the same issue?

This is why you don’t get the Air
The hate boner some people have for the Air is pretty funny.

Edit: Just to add to this, the problem is probably because you’ve got it on max volume. Nothing sounds good at absolute max volume, particularly phone speakers - whether it be stereo or mono.

I’ve got my volume at about 75% and it’s perfectly fine - whether it be calls, on speaker, YouTube, doom scrolling, etc. Actually it’s more than perfectly fine - it’s surprisingly good. Better than I thought it’d be anyhow and not an issue at all.

Mainly because the Air is the most premium looking this year…
Exactly. I don’t know why some people can’t simply be happy with what they’ve got, instead of feeling the need to take pot shots at other people’s choices - especially when most of the people taking pot shots probably haven’t used an Air for a significant amount of time, or outside of an Apple Store.

Unfortunately that’s human nature for you. They try to put others down in order to make them feel better about themselves, their choices and their phones.

Sad reality…

I have been using my Air since Friday, phone calls, speaker phone, YouTube videos and the speaker is fine for me. I knew I was not going to get the same speaker volume as my 15 Pro had because the phone is half as thick and you always sacrifice something for a thinner lightweight device. I think Apple did a great job on the Air, so far I happy with my upgrade and time will tell along with any future updates as for my long term review.

So did you find that on your replacement air that it had the same issue? I’m in the same boat. I’m debating exchanging but I’m not sure there’s any point so it would be great to hear your experience after exchanging if that’s the case. I’m noticing exactly the same.. I find anything above 60% volume, voice audio starts to distort / sound tinny, phones and videos.

Seems to be just the way the speaker is. Lots of user reports of it.

How’s the replacement phone?
Exactly the same 😞 I’m going to return it and just get the normal iPhone 17. I could live with the other Air shortcomings but that speaker is a deal killer for me. I’ve been holding on to my 13 Mini, so, battery life wasn't any worse than that and the single camera was for sure better than the 4 year old 13 Mini dual cameras. Oh well… maybe they will address the horrible speaker in the next iteration. If they are only going to give us one speaker, it should be a great single speaker for the price they are asking for the device.
