I am considering purchasing an iPhone this week. My situation and questions are below:

1. I have a Verizon phone via work. This phone number to this phone is very important.
2. I want to purchase a new iPhone for personal, and keep my work phone.
3. Can I simply activate call forwarding on my verizon phone and receive calls on my iPhone?
4. Is there any downside to this?
5. In the future, if I ever terminate my work phone with Verizon, can I get that phone number back?

I appreciate everyones help!!

Enabling call forwarding on your VZW phone should work just fine. The only potential downside I can see is that the iPhone may not show the originating caller's phone number. I've never tried it to know for sure what number will show on your screen.

As for terminating your VZW phone, as far as I know, once that's done, you won't be able to get the number back. If the number matters that much to you, and you don't have another phone to transfer it to, your best bet would probably be to port that number to a cheapie prepaid cell until you figure out what you want to do with it.

I do that for work, with a different carrier though. The only downside is using your minutes for work, but I have plenty so I don't worry about that.

you can get the number back, you just have to make sure you do it before you cancel

What number shows up when it's forwarded?

Say my main number is 999-999-9999 and I forward it to 333-333-3333, what number will show up? The person calling me, or the 999-999-9999?

I forward our house number to my iPhone all the time, I see the number of the person calling me, not my house number. It may depend on Verizon though and how they forward the call.
