iPhone and Comcast.net

I discovered a frustrating issue with the Wifi/EDGE combination that prohibits me from sending mail in both. I was hoping that someone's found a work-around.

When associated with WIFI, the iPhone is connected to my router and comcast's cable network. When on EDGE, the iPhone is obviously not on comcast's network.

Apparently, SMTP port requirements change based on your location (ie on or off the network). So, with the iPhone, you'd need to switch outgoing mail-server ports whenever you jumped on or off the wifi--what a pain.

I spoke with the comcast people through their live chat service, and they were less than helpful. I got a number of responses:

1.) All macs must use port 587 regardless of location.
2.) There are different port configurations for different locations (which seems to be the case)
3.) That comcast has begun flagging accounts for spamming activities, and cutting off port 25 for those accounts. Port 25 is apparently capable of operating in both environments, so i had it restored for my account. Still no good.

Anyway, i was wondering if anyone else has looked into this or found a solution.

You've done the smtp.whatever.net:587 thing, right?

Comcast will send mail on both EDGE and wifi, so long as you use a port they accept other than 25. I had trouble with port 587, so I used 465.

Here are my settings (thanks to dpicardi at MacNN forums):

Outgoing mail server:
smtp.comcast.net:465

User Name:
Your user name (without the @comcast.net)

Password:
Your password

Under the advanced tab:
Outgoing uses SSL is ON
Authentication is set to password

Don't know if it matters, but I'm located in Massachusetts.

What exactly would you type in the "incoming mail server" HOST Name for a comcast.net account??

Should IMAP or POP server be highlighted for such a comcast.net server??
