First up, I should say that I have no idea if this is a common thing. It never happened to me with my 3G, or any of the other 3Gs (as in 3Gs plural, not 3GS) I've used. Also, I have a fair few earrings: 5 in my left ear, 8 in my right. All are standard stainless steel sleepers (I think, they're about 5 years old, so I'm not 100% on the material).
On the day it came out in Aus, I got a 3GS, and it was awesome. Then the connection with the remote on my in-ear headphones got screwy, called the Apple Care folks and they told me to reset all settings, which fixed it for about an hour and then it stopped working again. Resetting the settings hasn't fixed the issue again. (I have no idea if this is connected.)
Soon after, I started having to use my phone a lot while plugged in, my partner went overseas and so we'd have long conversations which my poor little 3GS' battery couldn't handle. Apparently my phone didn't like that. It would kinda vibrate weirdly on my face for a while, then it touched one of my earings and OW, it shocked me and not in that uncomfortable static shock kinda way but in a really really painful, lasting electric kinda way. Then after that it just kinda stung when it touched my skin, kinda like touching a pot of boiling water, only different. (If that makes sense?) And it left faint little red marks on my face.
Now I'm not 100% that my earrings did anything, or if it was the phone or the 2 different power adaptors in two different rooms. But with my total lack of phone and electric knowledge, I'd say that something started to go wrong in the phone, then the baddness made further baddness happen, which ended in pain.
That all happened about a week ago, since then I haven't used it plugged in and I've talked to the Apple Care folks, who put me through to a product specialist who sounded kinda freaked out about it. I'm taking it to the Apple Store tomorrow (I haven't been able to make it earlier due to work) and should have more info then.
Unfortunately I'm not sure if I'd ever used the phone plugged in before, I usually charge it while I sleep and have to unplug it for it to reach my face when I'm in bed.
I just thought that this was maybe the kinda thing I should share, perhaps other people with earrings have had similar issues, or maybe you guys could better explain it. It's definitely something that people should keep track of, since phones should not electrocute people, no matter how mildly.
CORRECTION: It just happened to me again when I accidentally answered while it was plugged into my MBP. It didn't feel so much like touching a hot pot, but a bit more like static. But instead of being quick like static, it kept going and felt... I dunno.. Different but similar.
