So, I really wish that that iPhone would use the EvDO technology. Just from what I've read online it seems to be a very good service. Any reasons why apple and cingular might not have done this?

I'm pretty sure that EvDO is on the CDMA network, like Verizon uses. 3G and Edge are on the GSM network, such as Cingular uses.

You are correct. There are tons of threads discussing this as well. Bottom line - GSM is more "global."

Right. And Apple wanted a product that would run on the same network in every country they want to sell their product. GSM is used in Europe and most other places in the world. U.S. is nearly alone in having CDMA service better & more popular than GSM.

Ah, well, that does make sense. I think my confusion came because I was under the impression that the Palm treo that cingular sells used EVDO so I figured why not the iphone use it. But anyways..

so how does 3G compare to EVDO in speed and the such?

Cingular's Palm Treo 750 is UMTS (GSM 3G).

Cingular's 3G rollout has lagged behind Verizon's EVDO rollout, as Verizon is now moving to the faster Rev A of EVDO. Although having recently switched to Cingular from Verizon,I will have to say the Treo based data and voice is better. I still have a Rev A EVDO data device with Verizon.

It believe that Rev.A (EvDO) and HSDPA (3G) have similar speeds, but it is true, Verizon's EvDO network is quite a bit larger than AT&T's 3g. I have a BlackJack (3G device from AT&T) and while in and around Portland and other major cities I get 3g, in countryside and 'burbs I often drop down to EDGE, although almost never to GPRS. Granted, when I was on Verizon before this, I didn't even get service in the 'burbs, so I'm not complaining. I googled but could not find a true number for number D/L U/L speed comparison. Has anyone else made one or seen one online?

Sprint puts EvDO in any city with a population of 100,000 or greater. I've been pleasantly surprised several places but other areas, the speed is about twice that of dialup or around EDGE. They claim 400-700 Kbps average on revision 0 and 450-800 Kbps average on revision A with top speeds of 1.1 Mbps and 3.1 Mbps on rev. 0 and rev. A, respectively. The top speeds are lower than I've seen for UMTS/HSDPA but the average speeds aren't much different.

Sprint also mentioned that it intends to roll out a 4g technology in 2008 that has top speeds of around 280 Mbps but I won't be holding my breath.

From my cell phone shopping experience here in Canada, EvDO is faster than Edge, but is only available in certain areas, where as Edge is just as fast and available just about anywhere you get a signal.

My problem seems to be that my phone's processor and RAM can't keep up with the speed of the internet. I download programs and files from email just as fast as on a computer, but net browsing is slow, I am guessing due to the weak internals. I wonder what the internal iPhone specs are, it may make a big difference, although since it IS running OS X and is quite pretty I imagine it will be up to the task.

Wimax

Sprint will be rolling out it's 4G network. If for any reason they don't there will be a big problem. They are a basket case company as it is if they can't do this they are done for. Ohh yea their 4G is Wimax I think not sure but that is what I have been told by some insiders and also from tech news outlets. :D
