iPhone and GMail

I know there are a few threads here about the inability of GMail to work properly with the iPhone, however those threads seem real technical and not sure if they are exactly what I am looking for.

I just got my iPhone 2 days ago and when I go to gmail.com to check my e-mail, I can check and read my e-mail, but I can't seem to respond normally. The keyboard pops up right over the writing space (so I can't see what I am writing) and there is a huge delay in typing.

Can someone explain to me (step by step- in moron terms) what the best way to read and reply to GMail on the iPhone.

If you set up your e-mail through the e-mail setting instead of trying to browse to gmail.com it will work better for you. Just go to Settings ---> Mail --> Add account and select the Gmail logo for the account. Then follow the instructions and you should be good.

Then instead of going through the web (which I think is what you are doing) just click on the envelope and check/answer mail there.

Connection Failed?

I'm having a different GMail issue. Whenever I go to the Mail icon, it starts to search for e-mails and ultimately a window pops up that reads, 'Cannot Get Mail. The connection to the server "gmail" failed.'

Any idea of what's causing this? I can go to my GMail account no problem through the web.

simplw qork around for g-mail

set up a yahoo account: iphonejohn@yahoo.com (for example). Set g mail to forward to that. Works great and you still have the original on the mac to work with later. Set e mail on I phone to thje yahoo account, it does it auto.

Thanks for the reply. I did that and it works much much better. I have a question about that:

I have it set to check the lat 25 most recent messages. It seems to be automatically adding old messages to meet the "25 minimum requirement". For example, in my current gmail inbox account I have 3 messages in there (the rest are archived). However, on my iPhone it tells me that I have 452 messages total. How can I set it so that it only checks the 'new' messages? I suppose I can go through and delete all 452 messages, but that is a pain in the a$$.

What is the benefit of doing it this way? Would it work better? Quicker retrieval of messages? Would it still have gmail's great spam filter?

In settings, what is "recent mode"?


--> I just want this thing to show me any new messages in my GMail inbox and the iPhone seems to want to keep searching for old archived messages. How do I stop that?
