iPhone and iPod touch- mutually exclusive?

Seeing as the iPhone is basically an iPod touch plus more features, is it fair to say that you won't see too many people with both? If you have an iPhone, why get the touch?

Will one end up cannibalizing the other's sales?

Apple are hugely keen to sell as many iPhones as they can, but they may find its biggest competition is the iPod itself.
 
ummm, I would assume if you had an iphone you would not get an iTouch...that would be pointless. The iPhone does everything the iTouch does and more.

and if you dont have either, it would be stupid to buy an iTouch and then go back and say "oh well I really want an iPhone now" so people will have to consider if they will want an iPhone anytime in the near future.

What do they care? Either you buy an iPhone or an iPod. Either way, it's money in the bank for Apple.

If you need a phone with internet and a very large monthly rate, you get an iPhone. If you don't, you get an iPod.

I'd actually be more worried about the iPod Touch cannibalizing notebook sales. My son is seriously considering getting the new iPod instead of saving for a notebook.
 
The recurring income from iPhone sales is a big boost for AAPL, and the market likes its sales numbers simple.

I just worry people won't get the iPhone now that they have this cheaper option. Now you can have a flashy multi-touch iPod and browser in your pocket, and still use your old phone.
 
I think with the price drop of the iPhone, the iPod will be the product suffering. The capacity difference is almost negligible, 16GB capacity isnt better than mobile phone and email features in my opinion. 16GB wont hold entire music libraries of most people.
Its a shame, as back in 2001 apple were putting everyone into the mindset of carrying all their music in their pocket, which makes it even more difficult for me to want to go from my 30GB.

I think it's great for people who are not fans/customers of AT&T.
 
I think it might damage the sales of iPhones here in the UK. Im getting a touch as im not signing any contracts with networks and my current phone is fine. Also, its out this month!

I agree that Apple probably doesn't care anymore at this point, although the iPhone is Steve's baby and he wants to see it succeed. The iPod is already a huge success - at this point the name sells itself. Besides the pride issue, though, you're definitely right - why would Apple care which you choose to buy?

As far as iPod Touch versus a notebook though, I think your son might be the only one pitting the two against each other. Why would you buy an iPod if you needed a computer, or vice versa? Two completely different products. To say "I'd actually be more worried about the iPod Touch cannibalizing notebook sales" is just plain silly.

I was going to save for a MacBook but im getting a iPod insted because I think my laptop, although out dated, still has some time to go. Also, that new iPod rocks! But I dont think it will have a significant effect on notebook sales at all.

It's funny but I just sat here for a couple minutes and I just can't think of good way to put it to use.
