iPhone and MacBook Wifi Question

Hello everyone,

New member here, though I've browsed the posts for months. My question is this. My girlfriend is on the road in the UK a lot for the company we run (all Mac based) . With our iPhones we each get free wifi from "The Cloud" and she can go to, say McDonald's (ugh) and browse the internet. But when it comes to actually WORKING from another city it's a different story. She has a MacBook Pro but then has to pay for wifi if she is to upload files to printers or word/pages documents back to the office. This, of course, adds up and is nonsensical when the iPhone in her pocket has a free connection.

Is there any way at all that she can have the laptop and iPhone side by side in, say, McDonalds (ugh) and get the MacBook Pro to use the wifi that the iPhone is picking up free? Before the iPhone we used to get her MacBook Pro to dial up the internet using her Orange MPV PDA and that gave her full MacBook email anywhere in the UK at dial-up prices. Can we do this with the iPhone?

If not, do we suspect that the imminent release of the iPhone SDK may result in some clever boffin writing an app?

P.S. I'd still be interested if the answer involved unlocking the iPhone but that's not something we want to do. I'd just be interested to see how it was done and keep and eye on the future.

if all goes wrong, restore firmware and it will be like it was when you bought it

Thanks Phil. Do you know if this system would work if the iPhone was receiving WiFi? Reading the link you gave me (thankyou) it only seems to mention getting the laptop see the iPhone's EDGE network. Would this system still work if, say the iPhone was getting the free "Cloud" wifi? Would the laptop use that also, or does this workaround only work for EDGE? Also, do we think such a system will ever see the light of day as a legitimate software update or are Apple going to steer clear of such shenanigans?
