I am a medical student and was just wondering how many of you out there think that with the new SDK, more medical related apps will become available for the iPhone. I dont need a new phone now, but will start my clinical rotations in about 1 year. I think that I will want a smart phone/PDA for medical software and am hoping that I will be able to go for the iPhone.

There's one EMR app that already claims to be iPhone-optimised, but it's actually just using mobile Safari to use their normal web interface - can't remember the name just now though....

(googles it)

Ah, yes, Life Record is the name of it. Actually, there's a web app called pogoMD as well that claims to work with most EMR systems. I'm sure more will turn up, both in the EMR area and as drug databases etc.

I am really hoping an iPhone version of EpocratesRx is released for the iPhone. Other medical software that would be great:

5 minute clinical consult
Patient log of some sort
iWork (for medical presentations)

Im really hoping for something. At least Tabers and a drug book would be great. All through my clinicals I had my Treo650 and it really helped a lot. Fortunately now at the hospital I work they have wifi so I use that when I can but its not the same.

My Fiance is in her 3rd year of medical school and has these exact same questions and concerns. I'm going to show her this thread. She's getting an iPhone in a few months. Thanks.

I wrote a clinical laboratory reference app for the iPhone and have a beta of a pharmaceutical app out. Hopefully this next week I'll get the ICD-9 coding application finished, as well. I can guarantee the SDK should open a whole new world next month. I'm looking forward to developing more robust applications that are sanctioned by Apple.

When the SDK comes out, anyway you can make a program that keeps track of procedures done for credentialing?

I'm not sure I would be qualified to write one alone. I'm a healthcare administrator, not a physician. I would almost certainly need a consult or two on that one.

Up-to-date works quite well on the iPhone, even over EDGE (currently can only be used as a web-based app on the iPhone). Look like the interface is specifically modified for a small screen.

I hadn't tried it out as I didn't think it would work all that well, but I am impressed!

UpToDate Widget?

hey there,
Has anyone out there heard any info on UpToDate becoming available for the iPhone/iPod touch. I know that it can be viewed via web, but directly installed has definite advantages.

Otherwise, anyone out there with the skills to hack it in?

thought i'd check.

I personally like this one, use it quite a bit:

And, like you have on your iPhone, Papers is a must have app for anyone reading this thread:

1) Skyscape: Offers the BNF (the British National Formulary) now, unfortunately according to their website, you will need to renew your subscription yearly! However i thin it is worth the money.

2) Epocrates: Offers nice collection of applications. The drug division is free and is very useful. especially the drug interactions part.

Is there a version of epocrates or other similar app that does not require data access to use? One of the hospitals my wife works at has very poor signal...

Epocrates put out the iPhone version of their apps last summer. That is what prompted me to get the 3G.
Skyscape offers most of their catalog for the iPhone.

+ for that, currently Epocrates doesn't need internet access at all. Everything is stored in the iphone. You can try it. There is a trial for 2 months last time i checked, not sure if it is still available.
