iPhone and MP3 Auxilary Jack in car

I tried to play music using my new iphone in the car this morning via the built in MP3 cord that came with my car. The music did not come out of the speakers in my car. Does anyone know why this is or am i going to have to keep using my ipod to listen to music......

Do you have the latest iPhone software? (1.0.2)? If not, sync it up with iTunes and do an update.

The reason your aux jack does not work with the iPhone is because the iPhone jack itself is not a typical headphone jack. It is a bit longer than your typical headphone cable because it needs to support the microphone function.

SO pretty much you need to get some sort of converter from the iPhone Jack so it'll match your Aux Cable.

This is not the case at all.

They just have an extra ring on the jack for the microphone in the same amount of space as a real headphone jack, which is how headsets are done that still use the same jack.

Where did you figure out the above?

jlkirbee is incorrect, Ampidire is right. Perhaps you don't have the Aux jack selected as the input, or perhaps the volume isn't high enough on the iphone. Some cars require the ipod/iphone volume to be cranked all the way up, unless you crank the volume on the car up.

Personnel at the Apple store in Norfolk stated that at this time a device that broadcasts over FM is not available. The reason being that the phone functionality defeats the broadcasting functionality (even in airplane mode).

However, they said that as accessories are released, this problem will be solved.

I just use my old iPod for when driving.

Ah, I was assuming this was a problem with an AUX connection to the dock connector. I have heard mixed results of shaving a bit of plastic from the headphone cable around the jack. I suppose you could cut away at the iphone case too- but who does that?

I just use my old iPod for when driving.

I have hooked mine up to a wireless FM transmitter via the Dock connector and it works fine. The interference varys greatly by what transmitter it is. The belkin one is the best IMO. If you get interference, you can wrap some tinfoil around the cable or put the iPhone into airplane mode.

If it is in airplane mode, it should not transmit any wireless signals according to the FCC.

i have mine iphone plugged into my auxilary input with and audio jack... i had to shave the plastic of the cord so that the jack would go far enough down my iphone...now it works...

for reference:
my car is a 2006 honda element
and my auxilary input is an audio jack
so the cord i am using is audio jack to audio jack..

i think your problem might be the cord doesnt fit the recessed audio jack hole of the iphone...

I had the problem too. You need to get one of those little converters. The problem is the recessed jack in the iPhone. It doesn't allow the cable to properly seat and make connection to the correct rings inside the phone.

You just need a little cable so that you can plug one end into the iPhone that will fit properly, and out the other side you could put the cable that you use to connect to stereo.

anyway, as people have said, the recessed headphone jack is probably the problem...i tried my wife's iPhone in our car today and of course the $6 cable from radio shack didn't fit, so i just cut back the rubber casing a little and it now works fine! take a look, and try trimming the cable a tiny bit...

Actually he said MP3 cable that came with his car. As in many cars offered an aux input cable which was marketed as being for MP3 players.

Or at least thats my interpretation. And if the cable is actually hard wired to the car, it would probably be better to get one of those iPhone adapters rather than mutilate a part of your car.

The best thing I've found is something with a 'line out' connector like either your 'docking station' or a car charger with a line out (monster brand)

I have a Honda Element and my Belkin adapter works perfectly. I can listen to movies and music through my car speakers.

I'd be lost without it.

They do. I have one that fits the iPhone jack recess and is sprung-loaded so it winds in excess cable. I thought it was made by Belkin, but I can't find it on their site. I will try to remember to note that manufacturer when I go back to my car.

I purchased the Belkin iPhone headphone adaptor at CircuitCity and connected it to my cars AUX input via a 1/8" to 1/8" cord from Radio Shack. I can play my iPhone through my cheap Sony car stereo just fine. In fact, I purchased my car stereo a year ago just so I could play my iPods (and iPhones) this way and it has always worked.

The Belkin adaptor was $10 and the cord was about $3.

Yes, it's from Belkin. I bought one for my dad this weekend and it works great.

My Honda CRV has a jack socket in centre console, which I can connect my iPhone up to. I do have to turn the volume on my iPhone all the though when used this way.

I got a £5 male to male 3.5mm jack lead and paid about £7 for a converter.
Quite a bit cheaper than the £££s a proper Honda-iPhone connector would cost!
