Hi all, I was wondering if it would be possible to run palm OS or windows mobile on the iPhone - not because I want to, but we need a PDA for third year medical school and are required to have either a Palm or Windows Mobile based PDA. I was wondering if I could use the iPhone for that....Thanks!

Hi all, I was wondering if it would be possible to run palm OS or windows mobile on the iPhone.

Highly unlikely you'd get either to run on the iPhone. For one thing, Windows Mobile kinda needs to be licensed and customized by the manufacturer to run correctly on most devices, and I doubt Apple is going to do that. And neither Palm nor WM have the drivers necessary to interface with the touch screen.

I'm not saying it's impossible, but it would require some serious hacking and a lot of writing drivers from scratch, something I doubt most developers would want to spend time doing given that the interface on there is already quite good. And those who really want/need either OS would be better suited getting hardware that already exists for both OSes. Besides, without OS X, you kinda lose the very thing that makes an iPhone what it is.

Are there specific applications that you must run that require either a windows Mobile or Palm device? Normally if a place of business or institution requires a certain type of device, they usually pick one OS and stick with it.
