iPhone and Panther?

Has anyone tried an iPhone with Panther? I know that Tiger is listed as a requirement, but the version of iTunes works with Panther as well. I do have access to a Mac with Tiger and a XP PC if it was needed for activation, but I'd want to sync things with the Panther computer. I could always upgrade if necessary, but I really have no other reason to do so.

iTunes will work as usual, but when you try to sync it will tell you to upgrade. If anyone knows a work around, please advise.
