Hi, since my mother says she won't ever leave her house because of Covid and sees no point in upgrading her iPhone 5c (lol) to a new iPhone, she wants to buy a cheap Android phone where she can keep using her #1 app... Whatsapp. I've read there are lots of problems migrating this app from Android to iPhone but is this the case viceversa? And if so, how to prevent data loss? She has lots of it and doesn't want to lose it. Sorry if this this thread is repeated, I was only able to find android-iPhone migration problems.

The problems go both directions. The iPhone version relies on iCloud for backup while the Android version relies on Google Drive. The iPhone version won't check Google Drive for a backup and Android can't connect to iCloud in such a way that WhatsApp being able to find a backup is an option.

I volunteer on forums related to Android, we get this same question from time to time. There may be some convoluted way of exporting the chat history to GMail then importing it, but I've not done it or paid much attention to the process.

If the Android device is Samsung, Smart Switch does the job flawlessly, either direction.

Smart Switch works for transferring contacts/SMS/call log and photos. But not whatsapp. Whatsapp message transfer simply does not work from android -> iPhone or vice versa. There are many apps on the net that claim to do it for a charge, but I wouldnt trust them. See reply from hallux above as to the reason.

My mistake.

I was positive I transfered Whatsapp data from my iPhone to my Fold 2, but it was probably from my S20+.

I've used this: https://mobiletrans.wondershare.com/ to go from Android to iPhone and then back again and haven't lost data. It's not the slickest of processes, but it give step-by-step instructions. (Not affiliated with the product btw)
Did you do a direct transfer or back up and then restore. I’m looking to do the same but worried about the security of this application and my data. Did it transfer everything? I did start the process but it was taking hours to read my iPhone? Thanks.

The process is a backup/restore. The instructions are pretty simple to follow. It worked perfectly for me. Restored 80k+ messages (total backups size is 14GB) from iPhone to Android probably in around an hour
