iPhone AppleCare valid international - even on a RSR?

So this is the situation:
I have been living in the US for 18 months, and am now going back to Germany. I have an iPhone 3G with att plan, and these are the details:

1_I want to go for a reduced suspension rate, since I might come back and don't want to lose my number. Does anyone know if the suspended months will count towards the length of my 2 year plan?

2_I bought AppleCare for the iPhone, and someone wrote somewhere that AppleCare for the iPhone is only valid as long as the iPhone is on a att plan (meaning, if I would cancel the plan, the hardware wouldn't be covered by Apple anymore - seems weird...) - is that true? and if it is, would AppleCare cover the iPhone while on a reduced Suspension Rate?

Unfortunately, due to the carrier locks, Applecare for iPhones won't work outside of their country of origin, even the unlocked ones you can buy in France and New Zealand can only be serviced by those countries.

Geniuses (?) can only order the same phones (for replacements) that the country in question sells, so no dice there I'm afraid.

They could restore it, I'm sure.

Everything else Apple sells, Applecare is International. So is Procare (at least to countries that have it) or at least it used to be.

but that would mean, that if i take it to Germany, it breaks, i bring it back here (if my att contract is still suspended), they would replace it. right?

Things might have changed. A friend of mine who's Italian and bought an unlocked 3G a while ago and later moved to Spain, just had her iphone serviced in Spain eventough it's an italian one.

they sent her a refurb 3g unlocked for all networks (so obviously not a spanish iphone which would be locked in for movistar).
