iPhone apps on a iMac?

Will iPhone apps work on an iMac?
I see most of the apps in the app store are iPhone apps.
My Local news channel has an app to alert of breaking news and weather.
It was made for iPhone and was just wondering if it would work.

The short answer to that is: No they won't work.

The long answer is: No, compiled apps downloaded from the App Store won't work. This is primarily because they are compiled for the ARM hardware architecture and the simulator runs using the CPU of your Mac which is Intel. Apple do not include Rosetta style dynamic instruction set translation software with the simulator. When you use the SDK to build apps builds for the simulator are compiled to Intel x86 and for the device to ARM which is what allows this to work. If you had the source code to an app (which you never get from the App Store and no developer is likely to give you) then you could re-compile the app targeting the simulator.
