I have tried probably over 10 apps now and its clear that this is a hardware restriction than anything else but was wondering if anyone knew.

Its quite diffiuclt to explain but....What I was looking for is the ability to start and record a workout from the Watch but view and see metrics on the iPhone in real-time such as when running indoors. It seems this can only be done when starting the app within the iPhone only as primary source, but not the other way around. (Watch > iPhone)

Most apps offer the iPhone + Watch option (Companion App) but this will then use the iPhone as the tracking device and is no good if you just leave the phone on the shelf when running (i..e on a treadmill) as it assumes you are not moving (it just streams the iPhone telemetrics to watch) - If you choose Watch Only it will only display metrics on the watch screen and NOT the iPhone.

What happens is that you will need to choose either between the Watch as the tracker OR the iPhone, but when choosing the Watch as the source, this will not feed data directly back to the iPhone such as distance, heart rate etc until the workout is complete. I want to be able to place the iPhone in front of me so I can see the real time data being fed back from the watch to the phone. I would love to be able to view the iPhone screen for data the watch is collecting but pretty sure its not possible. Any thoughts anyone? Thanks

So, like the phone acting as a dashboard on the treadmill (or bike, or whatever)?

That'd be pretty cool, actually. If a third-party app doesn't step in, maybe Apple would do it in watchOS 5. Sent them a feature request yet?

Yes exactly, you use the watch to capture movement and metrics that are then displayed in real-time on the iPhone. This is not currently possible. It would be especially good if you could have HR Rate and Zone graphs on the iPhone taken from the watch so you can view levels. The closest there is to this, is with the Nike+ Run Club which does have a screen showing your Heart Rate Metrics from the watch HOWEVER, this still has to be started from the iPhone and therefore you need to hold the iPhone when moving to capture the data, if you start as a Watch version, then you only get metrics on the watch.
