So, could an app be written so that an iPhone could be used as a remote control for AppleTV?

Theoretically, yes. Because of the hackability of the AppleTV, a real wiz could load a program on there that would interface with the AppleTV OS and control it, as well as accept commands over a socket on TCP/IP. Then, they would also have to make the client side as a web app for the iPhone, and have you open up whatever port they chose on any firewalls that might be in the way (either on your end or your ISP's).

Shorter answer, probably never going to happen, and really not all that useful anyway.

I've been thinking a lot lately about buying the 160GB apple TV but I haven't yet convinced myself to do it. It seems like a great Idea becuase I do not buy DVDS anymore. And now Im just finding things for uploading dvds to my computer etc etc.

So who knows we will see

In case you haven't found them yet, for OS X, the best DVD uploading will be handbrake (also free). VisualHub is useful for a lot of things too, but is not free (I bought it because it was so great), but you probably don't need that if all you want is ripping DVD's. Handbrake even has some nice iPod presets for you.
