Is there an app out that would allow the iPhone to be used as a flash drive? So basically to be able to use the usb cord to plug into a computer, and be able to drag and drop files to and from the HD on the phone? I would not need access to the whole HD but maybe just to a specific directory on the HD. Is this possible?

yea Ive heard that there are apps out there to do that over WiFi but is there anything to do it through the usb cable? WiFi wont really work for me because the only time I would need to use it is when im not at my house (I can just use SSH when Im home). So when I would need to use it, I do not have wifi. Any example of this is when im using the computer lap at school, or doing a presentation for one of my classes (using the professors laptop). at these times, I cannot set up the phone and wifi connection to do this. I would need a simple usb solution, to plug it in and have drag and drop access without setting anything up (just as a flash drive works). It doesnt sound like there is anything out there to help me out?

Wi-Fi will work for you just fine. Just create an ad-hoc wireless network, and connect to that with your device.

So this means that the iphone and the computer can transmit information wirelessly without having an actual wireless connection (i.e. using the same router)?

Yep, one of the two (laptop in this case) is the accesspoint the other (iphone) the client.

Yes you can.

You need either PhoneView (MAC) or TouchCopy (PC).

This allows you to see your iphone in disk mode, and copy and paste files to/from it.

It works fine through usb. no wifi needed. only you need to install phoneview/touchcopy on the computer

Is there any software that doesn't require installation? I need this the most because I can't install anything on a campus macs, also no wi-fi either.

there is a way

If you are jailbroken you can download USB drive from cydia it allows you to partition your hard drive say a gig and save and transfer via your iphone usb cable.
