iPhone As A USB Mass Storage Device App?

I wanted to explore/inquire about a comment Jaseone wrote in the DataCase thread:

The problem with this type of app at the moment is that they require both the host PC and your iPhone to be part of the same wireless network, to me that is pretty much useless as a lot of the PC's I work with don't even have WiFi cards. Until someone comes out with functionality similar to turning the iPhone into a USB Mass Storage Device (if that is even possible) then all of these apps are a bit pointless to me.

Sure would be nice to turn the iPhone into an external hard drive, thumbdrive, jumpdrive, etc.

Datacase requires wifi - so it seems useless unless wifi is present - for example, here at work, no wifi ... so I cannot use Datacase to transfer files to and from my at work computer.

I guess MobileFinder should work via ftp ... but shouldn't we be concerned transfers over the web?

Any ideas/suggestions? Thank you!

If you don't like FTP try Files. It uses WebDav and I believe can be accessed by any computer (wired or wireless) anywhere by just using the IP address. Mobile Finder's site says that they will be implementing WebDav in the next release.

But you are correct that the iPhone does require at least a wireless connection of some sort. Hopefully Apple will allow the iPhone to be a mounted volume someday.

But how do you think you would connect to your iPhone via FTP? I am pretty sure AT&T (or whatever your local carrier is) wouldn't allow you to run an FTP server over EDGE/3G so again that means you would need both the PC and the iPhone to be a member of the same wireless network. The same goes for WebDAV, it doesn't matter on the protocol being used the devices still need to be on the same network until Apple allows connections via USB in the SDK (don't hold your breath).

You are correct ... I emailed the MobileFiles developer and he said AT&T will not allow this over EDGE/3G ... oh well.
